My 18 month old is wearing his first pair of shoes. We bought them on August 1, and the man in the store said to come back in 3 months, which would be next week. By my older one, after 3 months, his shoes were really worn out and he really needed new ones. But this one, the shoes still look brand new pretty much. The bottom is not worn out at all as we hadnt gone out much with the shoes on, and the top is only scuffed a bit. So whats the deal with getting new ones? is it because his feet grew (but then wouldnt he cry when I put them on?)? Or is this just a marketing gimmick?

Please keep in mind, that for me it is important to purchase quality shoes for my kids, so its not an issue of spending $10-$20 on a new pair, but more like $60-$70.

When the guy said that you should come back in 3 months, he probably meant that he just wants to check and see if the shoes still fit.
That's how my store works. Sometimes after checking, they send me home and tell me to come back in x amount of time.
(But you have to know your store. Will they be honest, or are they just in it for the money?)

my first son needed new shoes every 2-3 months, my other son can stay in shoes for 6 months at a time.

I also believe in buying the $60 shoes for the first year or so, so what I do is I do go back every 2-3 months to have my kid's foot measured not to see if the shoe fits. This way they cant tell me the kid needs to new shoes when the size they are claiming is the size he is still wearing.

it is also possible that your son still fits in the first pair because he's stretched them out. Thats what happened with my second son and his first pair of shoes.

I do suggest that you do go back after three months to check and dont get lazy on it because it took having my first son cut his head open for me to realize his shoes were too small and I dont wish that on anyone (I was having ideas of his shoes not fitting well, but he never complained and was walking fine, then he fell a couple of times one day and the next day was running to the playroom and tripped - because of the shoes being too small - and he cut his head open. thank G-d no stitches were needed but he does have a tiny scar now.)
