I just moved to a new apartment in Israel and I have stared to see roaches in my apartment. This shabbos I had two on the counter! I need a fast way to get rid of them before they multiply! I'm pregnant so extermination is not an option- nor is any bug spray. Anyone know any natural solutions??

Exterminate and leave the apartment for a while. You can do it on a Friday and go away for Shabbos. By the time you return the fumes should be gone.

Sorry mate, but you might well have to exterminate. It depends how bad they are, and what they are.

If they are the big ugly waterbugs, you might be lucky enough to spray K-2000 around your kitchen and that will be enough as they are relatively easy to get rid of. (Get your dh to it, and you stay out of there for a few hours.) But if that doesn't work, you will have to get exterminators in. In the dim and distant past, I did this during pregnancy and it isn't so bad. You should ask the spray company for specific instructions for pregnancy and little kids. If they are professional, they will take that into account and give you clear instructions. I'd even say to get them to come on an erev Shabbos and then go away and don't come back till after Shabbos.

If, on the other hand, they are German cockroaches, which are little brown beetles that gradually invade your home, then you can tear your hair out gradually, but you will have to get someone in also who deals with them specifically as regular bug spray and regular extermination don't get rid of the darn things.

I'm still in the middle of my saga with the little Nazis, but if you PM me I can tell you which company NOT to use! Twisted Evil

Step one would be to google waterbugs, cockroaches, and German cockroaches. If you find a mugshot of your little friends, it will be easier for you to find a solution.

And don't be too afraid of the spray. The diseases that these little blighters carry with them are far worse for you than one afternoon/evening of spray ...

Not if you deal with it ASAP.

It looks like it might be the german roaches-though the normal roaches look pretty similar. Is there any way I can get rid of them myself - without extermination.

I've been driving myself up the wall with these rotten things for the past year!!!! Don't leave it bc they proliferate at a rate of knots.

If you think they're German ones, you have to find a reputable company to get them gone. The regular companies seem to be useless. I'm still fighting with an extermination company about this and they are supposed to be coming back to do their job properly finally this Wednesday iy"H. I wrote a thread about it some weeks ago. (The Germans Have Invaded ... in the Israel forum.) If this stupid company actually does their job in the end, I'll tell you, but I hold out little hope ...

There is a company in the phone book called Dr. Juk who sprays against German cockroaches. But you must tell them that they are German cockroaches when you speak to them. It's more expensive than regular spray - but well worth it! If my stupid company doesn't do the job this time, I'll be trying Dr. Juk next time myself!

A little late to post here -- but definitely find a subtle way to ask your neighbors if they have problems. I assume your apartment is surrounded by other apartments, and roaches tend to move from one apartment to the next. So it is possible that even if you exterminate, if your neighbor has a problem they will eventually just come back to you again.

For the short term, here is trick I once picked up when living during college in a very nasty apartment -- spray kitchen cleaner directly on the roach until you have soaked it -- then it somehow flips over and dies, and you can dispose of it. It won't get rid of the problem, but it will help you out until you can get a professional.
