Yesterday I bought a Rockfish from the shop. I was running late to take my DH to a bus so I bought the fish without them gutting it.

Today, I gutted my fish and found another fish inside it (presumably my fishy's last meal). Is that fish edible? If so, do I need to be concerned about kashrus? I think I see a scale or two still attached (I can get my step-father who used to work in a fish shop for me to confirm it for me, but the ins are basically gone except for a little thing sticking out of the bottom.

Has anyone ever had this before? What did you do?

You are a tzedekes.

I'm on lots of calcium ascorbate fending off a sinus and ear infection. AS a result, my stomach is not right. ANd this year, I could not handle fish heads...much less gutting a fish. I wouldn't touch them. I made DH get them ready and put them in the pan, and I poured/shook whatnot onto them, coverd them, and baked them...I'm feeling icky again...

Interesting though.

Wow, Atali, that is amazing mazal!

Now, the research project is to find a source for this segula!

[Although it makes sense - fish inside fish is like a pregnant woman; fish in general multiply fast...especially R"H when we eat simanim that symbolize brachos]

Laughing

BTW, my step-father confirmed that it has scales. So we have a kosher fish. If anyone wants, PM me.

Update on the fish:

I have broken the fish up into little pieces and it is in my freezer. Anyone who wants can PM me and pick up a piece today or after Rosh Hashana (in Baltimore) or on Erev Yom Kippur in Crown Heights.

I was not up to cooking fish heads so I had an idea that went over quite well.

I made a tuna mousse, and set it in a square pan. Then I drew a picture of a fish on a piece of paper, and used it as a form to cut the mousse. I decorated my "fish" with cucumber circles for scales, an olive eye and a red pepper mouth.

It was a conversation piece.

My husband (who has been fishing since age 2) says not the eat the inner fish; something about the digestive juices makes it not healthy to eat.

IMO, before eating it, ask a professional. And find the source of the segulah.

Okay, I'll leave that to whoever wants it.

I am offering the fish, but am making no guarantees as to whether it is healthy to eat or not (although I had a bit and seem to be fine).

My motto is when in doubt, google it. So I did. I didn't find anything about eating a fish found inside a fish, but I did find this:

A businessman who lost his mobile phone on a beach was amazed when it turned up - in the belly of a giant cod.

Andrew Cheatle thought it had been swept out to sea after it slipped from his pocket.

But a week later his girlfriend's mobile rang and it was fisherman Glen Kerley saying he'd found the phone in a 25lb fish, reports The Sun.

Andrew got the handset back, dried it out - and amazingly it still works.

Andrew, 45, said: "I was messing about with my dog and my phone must have fallen out and been swept out in the swell. I kept calling it but I gave up hope after a couple of days."

He was shopping for a new phone with girlfriend Rita Smith, 33, when her mobile went off.

She told him: "Your old mobile number is calling my phone."

Andrew continued: "She said some guy was going on about my phone and a cod so she handed it over to me and he told me where he had found it.

"I thought he was winding me up but he assured me he had caught a cod that morning and was gutting it for his fish stall and that my Nokia was inside it - a bit worse for wear."

Glen, of Worthing, West Sussex, said: "Cod are greedy fish - they'll eat anything. They have big heads and big mouths.

"I've found plastic cups, stones, teaspoons, batteries and I've also heard of someone finding false teeth in one.

"It was a bit smelly but I was glad to return it."

Atali are you sure the segula is to eat it?
I've never heard of it but it seems more likely the segula would be having had found it in which case it's your segula even if you have kids already.

I don't know anything about it. All I know is what I received from someone else in a PM. I never heard of it before then.
