when you have guests, a family or two for shabbos lunch, what is your typical menu?

example, fish, salad, chulent, schnitzel, 2 side dishes, and a vegatable, does that make a decent menu?

that does sound great.
I used to serve fish, eggsalad and veggis and then chulent
now I do either fish or eggsalad. I think its just too many courses and I dont get to sit much otherwise

I serve the same standard menu every week and when guest come I add some stuff or make it a little fancier. Sounds like you have a decent menu there. Make sure to buy drinks and desserts too. Enjoy.

I do
liver and eggs ands some salads (ie. tomato, lettuce, coleslaw, pepper, chummus, mayo garlic dip...)
I do the liver cuz my hubby likes it and its way cheaper then making fish also if we have guests sometimes instead of a reg lettuce salad I would add chicken strips
cholent
pot kugel
sometimes apple kugel
sometimes either grilled chicken or shnitzel (depends on the guests!)
pasta salad
basically thats what I do
also im in israel so things like deli are kinda expensive on a kollel budget Wink
and dessert of course (ie, mocha bundt cake, different types of cookies, lemon squares, fruit, individual moose cups)

other times... salads, a veggie dish, some kind of meat- either chicken, shnitzel, or something like mechshi or stuffed peppers but w/o sauce...

It depends on how many people are coming. We usually have 10-15 people. So I usually do
- challah
- a fish dish such as fake crab salad, sushi salad, gefilte fish, gefilte fish cake, tuna croquettes or tilapia shnitzels, ceviche.
- a sweet salad
- a salty salad
- caesar salad
- some kind of dip (1 or 2)
- guacamole, egg salad or something similar
- cholent
- cold cuts, deli roll or cold chicken
- some kind of veggie
- some kind of starch
- a chocolatey desert
- a fruity desert
- fruit

But We always have a TON of leftovers (which we enjoy for the next few days)

I usually make sure to have some kind of vegetarian side dish that's substantial enough. (We often have last minute guests). On the other hand, we often have bochrim many of whom seem to have aversion to vegetables, esp anything green.

Gefilte Fish from log (I love how all my guests ask if I make it myself, what is my recipe, lol!)

2-3 dips (egg salad, babganoush, gaucamole, chumus, techina, etc)

2-3 salads (tomato, four-bean, brocolli, asian eg baby pak choy, coleslaw or crunchy cabbage with soy sauce dressing, plain fresh veg salad, corn salad)

Friday night - good ol chicken soup, chicken either crumbed or with BBQ sauce, a starch and a veg - if it is a veg kugel (brocolli, spinach, etc) then I will do rice or potato wedges, if it is a starch kugel (potato, lokshen) I will do roast veg like zuccini pepper mushroom or green beans with almonds and sesame seeds.

Shabbos Day - Cholent with cold chicken from the night before, and cold kugel - the only one I don't like to serve with cholent is potato kugel, just to much potato in the cholent already, no more is needed.

Dessert - whatever I am in the mood of or was cheap or I happen to have - fruit like grapes and melon and kiwi, sorbet if there is some in the freezer, cake or apple crumble if I baked some, it is never elaborate, by that time the guests are usually stuffed anyway.

Shabbos day:Start with eggs and liver (used to do fish before that, but everyone was too full) with some dips and salads. In my crock pot I have chulent, potato kugel, kishka and meat. I also serve deli roll and some type of chicken (breaded/grilled). Usually I'll have another salad and a sweet kugel. My DH loves dessert and says all the guys do too, so I try making rich, good desserts, and serve together with some fruit.
