O.K. I don't have a stand mixer... I saw a brand new Bosch Universal Compact Mixer for $175. Is that a good price? More importantly, will it be good enough to make challah? It also includes the shredder and blender attachments.

my mother has the one on the left for years & I have the one on the right for a short while.
They are both great machines & there is an additional metal bowl w/ a dough hook that you can buy along w/ it, which is meant for challah.
It sounds like a great price. I paid $530 after taxes for the universal plus w/ the metal bowl at The Buzz in brooklyn.

my mother has that one for pesach, so I can't tell you about challah.
It's not the same heavy duty machine like the other ones.
She uses it for proccesing/ grating / slicing/ batter cakes/ ice cream...
If I remember correctly she did not pay alot for this model.

The compact won't do well for big batches of challah (5 lb recipes).
It's only 450 watts instead of the 700 for the regular model and the bowl is only 4 qts. It's smaller than most kitchen aids (not that I recommend those).
It's a good price if you don't use it much for large batches of challah and heavy doughs, but it's no where near as powerful as the regular sized one.
