I would like to go on vacation for a few days with dh. I am looking for something "away" but not something too far that the whole trip will be wasted on transportation. Like 4 hours is reasonable. We would like to have fun, relax and be away. I am not so good at planning these things, so the more information I can get, the better. What information can you send my way? TIA.

What type of stuff do you like to do?
boating
biking
hiking
museums
shopping

Is it important to have kosher resturants nearby or would you bring? Do you need a minyan.

The first thing that comes to mind is New Hampshire. I've never been there but if I had a few days to get away I'd love to go there.

I'm not so into museums. Boating, outdoor sports would be fun. I am not a shopoholic. New Hampshire sounded nice, from what I understand it is really big and I wouldnt even know where to go, what to do etc. Minyanim would be nice, but I'm not sure that I would only go where there are minyanim.

Newport RI has a minyan at Touro Synagogue only on shabbos. No kosher restaurants but there is a kosher B&B. magnificent beaches, scenery, water sports, ostentatious stately homes to drool over, parks. . RI is tiny so you can easily get to Providence, the nearest Jewish community of any size, if you're plotzing to eat out.

I double RI- we had a great time there. New Hampshire is great too but it's far, about 8 hours away. How about Lake George? Not sure how far it is though...
My sis has gone to deal, stayed in a cheap motel on the beach, had the minyanim and kosher restaurants nearby...

I would tell you to try one of the Caesar's resorts in the Poconos.
You'll get a romantic room with a Jacuzzi tub for 2 (you don't need the most expensive room.) The price per night includes a cereal breakfast and frozen Kosher dinners.
There are sports and activities on site, all inclusive, so you don't have to plan your itinerary. You can also drive from Caesar to Caesar to use the other resorts' facilities and join in on their activities.
Some of the rooms are older, so I would suggest that you choose one of the new rooms. Last time we went, we chose brand new rooms on the lower price scale, and it was beautiful and fresh.
Check out their website.

theres tons to do in the poconos and lots of places to stay. bushkill falls, kayaking down the delaware, jet skiing, speedboating on lake wallenpopak (sp?), horseback riding, etc. are you looking to stay somewhere fancy or in a motel type place?

What about connecticut. We went with kids so mabye what we did isn't so exciting but it was really relaxing. We went on a slow boat ride to a small island with an old lighthouse. There is an aquarium with an IMAX next door. We went to a park built around a really cool old castle. We walked on the beach in the evening when it emptied. It is not far at all.

Or what about Lancaster - visit the amish, spend a day at hershey park, visit a milk farm (there is one that even has cholov yisroel ice cream at the end - I think Pride of the Farm milks there, but they are closed on Monday)

Or washington, DC
There are kosher resturaunts in DC and potomic. You don't have to go the museums but just walk around and look at the monuments - can take all day. Great falls park nearby is gorgeous. Shenandoah Valley in Va is also nearby - it is gorgeous there - There are a lot of caverns there, you can go horseback riding.
Cunningham Falls is also nearby- it is a gorgeous hike where you can climb waterfall at the end.

They have meal mart food for breakfast and dinner. Boating, and other activities on site.
Do not pay the advertised rate. you could get it for half price with a club number.

What do you mean by a club number? Are you talking about the Forever Lovers club, or Starwoods Membership?

That sounds like Mystic Seaport.

Oh yeah, I'm just a wellspring of knowledge. Wink We actually went on our first family vacation there 20 years ago. I am guessing it has changed a bit, but we had a great time back in the day.
