Have any of you ever lived through a Rebbe succession? How did it happen? Was it father to son? Another relation? How did it work out? Was everyone supportive or was there division? Was the Rebbe niftar or did he just pass on the "power?" I'm not sure if that can be done... Can you tell me about the experience? I'm so curious about how that works...
** To add, please keep this a peaceful thread. Thanks! _________________ Just Plain Frum!

I have lived through many from the outside. Sometimes it was extremely peaceful, other times I have seen courts torn apart from within, both in Golus and here in EY.
There are no rules. It can really go well, but is often not just a function of differences in hashkofo but in economic factors as well.
As a rule it appears to me that the smaller (and poorer) the chassidus is, the less change of factionalism or of upheaval when the Rebbe is niftar and his son, or if he doesn't have one, nephew or son in law or grandson takes over. But maybe I'm wrong.
May we only know peace among yidden. _________________ "Olam Chessed Yiboneh", Tehilim 89.

| Ok, another question (and I would love if those from the inside would also answer) - from what I understand, of my limited knowledge of chassidisch groups, the Rebbe has a direct link with Hashem - then it's thought that the successor has that same link - from birth? From when the earlier Rebbe was niftar?

I think it's from when the person becomes rebbe.
My husband's best friend's father was a rebbe here in Israel. His shtiebel was in Tel Aviv. When his father passed away he told his children that he wanted this son(and not his other sons) to succeed him. And succeed him he did. It's not a large chassidus but when he has events at his shtiebel his father's chassidim come from all over.
My husband was close with the previous Amshinov Rebbe. He passed away decades ago (maybe 30 years?). His grandson succeeded him. (His daughter was married to a Litvish rav). This is the rebbe we know today and he is certainly imbued with a special kedusha. I've seen his ruach hakodesh at work, btw. I doubt he had it before he was officially THE rebbe. _________________ “All that is thought should not be said. All that is said should not be written. All that is written should not be published.
