The tricks to avoiding cracks in a cheesecake are:
1) bake in a hot water bath (there was a good article in one of this past week's magazines about how to do it)
2) make sure not to overcook it
3) bake it on a low, not high rack in the oven

I have never actually tried that as if I do steps 1-3 above, my cheesecakes don't crack.
