How do I wash my dh's tzitzis that the strings shouldn't tangle? I put it in a mesh bag but it doesn't help.

I do tzitzis by hand. My problem is that the strings essentially stay black. Yech. (We're talking kids' tzitzis btw).

Okay I'm going to need to start doing this for DS in about a year IY"H, so has anyone tried taking sections of strings and securing with ponytail holders? Have you tried handwashing and adding borax for whitening? Do you use regular detergent or Dreft or Woolite etc.? Might as well start reading up on this now! : Laughing

I put them in a sock and close the whole thing tight with an elastic band - doesn't always work, but often enough that it's worth the time.
Anyway my main problem is when DS is actually wearing tzitzis... he likes playing with the string and can untie a knot every day... by the time dh redid the missing knot, there is another one to do... a real problem when dh does not come home at night (once a week Crying or Very sad )and I'm stuck with a DS and no proper tzitzis (then he's crying...). got to learn to do the knots myself...

I wrap the strings in heavy duty aluminum foil, and safety pin them to the sides of the tzitzis.

ye I do the same. I wrap them in silver foil(not necessarily heavy duty) then fold it over once, put on an elastic rubber band and then put it into a mesh bag.

works every time

How do they come clean if they're wrapped in foil?

Well, this is for dh's tzitzis and they don't really get dirty to start with. Wink When the little guy starts wearing tzitzis, I'll have to come here for tips on how ot keep them clean... But the foil keeps them from getting tangled. Anyway, I wash them with detergent and bleach and they get wet so I'm assuming that (if they're getting wet) they can get clean that way too.

I learned this from my MIL: I wrap the strings around my hand into several loops, band it with rubber bands or hair ties, then just toss the whole thing in with my whites. When they are still wet I unwrap them and hang them from the strings, or iron depending, otherwise they are very curly, but very clean.

I hand wash hubby's tzitzis with whatever shampoo I have on hand. he doesn't appreciate walking around smelling like strawberry creme or whatever, but for some reason I find it works.

For DH tzitzis, strings don't really get dirty- I hand wash them in a bucket and as they are soaking, I let the strings hang out.

I use this great mesh bag that is meant for the strings of the Tzitzis only. There are elastic ties that keep the Tzitzis enclosed in the mesh bag, and the rest is open. Bought it right after we got married.

Do you think a local store would have it? I don't want to pay 3 dollars plus that or more for shipping. TIA.

I put the woolen taleisim katanim, as well as, the cotton/polyester ones into mesh bags, wash it together with my "parve" load (general colored) in cold water and they come out perfectly clean. I hang them dry afterwards.
I used to do like Mamacita but stopped it when I noticed that the tzitzis don’t get clean.

I think I bought it at Keter on 14th Ave and 38th St.
And Eichler's usually has things like this.

Every time I buy new tzitzis I put a drop of crazy glue on the bottom of the knot so they stay closed. It works great. As far as redoing knots by myself according to DH that woud make them pasul. It has to be done by a man l'shem mitzva.
