| |
I noticed in the middle of the night that (1 month old) DD's ear was covered in dry blood. I wiped away the blood - there's no sign of scratches and nothing is coming out of her ear (no fresh blood etc), I called the doc this morning, waiting for him to call me back...
Any ideas of what it could be? Should I be nervous?

Don't be nervous most likely she might have an ear infection with a burst ear drum. Although not a great thing in and of itself its not dangerous if dealt with and a isolated incident. You will probably need to administer antibiotic ear drops to wash out any infection in the ear canal and deeper and all will be well. I know of someone who tried to be smart and natural on her childs expense nad didnt treat such things and now her son has a permanent whole on his eardrum. So although I hate giving antibiotics there are certain times that I feel its called for.

This happened to me with my baby, who is a couple months now and not my first (although I don't remember this happening with my other kids). The first time, I rinsed it away and saw a slight scratch. She did it again recently.... she is strong and has this thing that she grabs her ears! I try to be vigilant re cutting her nails carefully, and making sure I don't leave an uneven edge. I was so surprised the first time- it happened during a nap both times and I found it when she woke up.... scary.
Ears (like the mouth) bleed a lot when scratched or cut.

| Happened to DD2 as a baby while I was driving carpool one day...I freaked out, but was thankful that DD1's teacher knew it was just a scratch...
