My 17 month old daughter vomits every single time she goes on a car or bus, even if it's a 5 minute trip. Besides for throwing up, she gets totally lethargic, spacey and unresponsive, sometimes within a minute or 2 of getting into the car.
Luckily we live in Yerushalayim, and almost everything we need is walking distance so we hardly ever take her in cars or busses. But we're going to be in the US for an extended visit soon and I don't know what to do. I wonder if she'll have less of a problem if she gets used to going in cars.
Did anyone ever have this problem? I've never heard of such a thing. I was carsick as a kid, but it didn't start that young, and didn't happen on short local trips.
The pediatrician says not to give dramamine until 2, but anyway I wouldn't give it every time we go on a 5 minute car ride.

My son has it often on busses. I few things might sometimes help minimally -
-don't give milk products or sweets before the ride
-it usually isnt in your control but try not to have music/radio playing
-sit next to a window so she can see out. It helps more than anything. They need to see the road and see outside. If possible sit in the front seat. It's even better for seeing out.
-Take off layers. Make sure she is not hot on the bus.
-sometimes talking to them can make it worse.

I'll try to think of more things I discovered. And as for you - always have bags ready in case....

He was only on an airplane once and that was before this motion sickness started.

DD used to get carsick easily. B"H, it seems she's (at least mostly) outgrown it. Mostly we tried to avoid giving her a lot to eat before a trip and we armed ourselves with plastic shopping bags (always double up in case of holes!). But the symptoms you are describing sound extreme - they come on so quickly and go beyond just queasiness and throwing up. What did your pediatrician say about the symptoms? Did s/he consider it normal?

but what about the plane ride ... I would give a low dose cause that is a far far trip to be vomitting on ... of course I learned it the hard way when 1 yr old was vomitting on an amtrak train to ny and we were all queasy ...

don't forget a change of clothing close at hand ...
