Along the lines of my other post...

If you heard the name yona, would you assume its a boy or a girl? Would you be more inclined to name a boy or a girl yona?

I only know one yona but its a girl... but as far as I know, its a more common boys' name.

I know one woman and I've known a few boys with that name. I happen to love the name and thought about it for ds, but the unisex tendency turned me off.

Both. But Yoni isn't a cute nickname in certain English-speaking places - it's a private body part.

Can be both. I almost used it for a great grandmother Toba, but decided against translating & going along with the unisex trend that I generally really dislike...

I was named Tova after a great grandmother Taibie. When my parents went to their Conservative Rabbi when I was born, he suggested Taibie sounds like Tova, and so it was. Later as my parents became more religious, my mom found out that Taibie in Yiddish is dove so she says had she known, she might well have named me either Yona or possibly Yonina. I know a few girls with both names. But definitely I know more male Yonas. I wouldn't want to name a girl Yona because it is so much more common as a male name (at least where I'm from).

I know more boys named that than girls.
We contemplated giving my daughter that name after the Yiddish equivalent of a relative, but I felt it was weird since she has an uncle with that name....which takes me to the other thread Wink

Ashkenazim - boy's name.

Sephardim (especially Teimanim) - girl's name.

I always assumed "Yona" was a boy but then married into a family with 2 female "Yona"s (one of whom actually grew up Breslov)

I know many males with the name Yona and a few females. I know of a case where a woman with the name Yona didn't have children for quite a number of years. She went for a blessing to a big tzaddik who said to her, "How do you expect a woman with a man's name to have children?" He told her to change her name and she had children. (Doesn’t mean that all women with the name Yona don’t have children or won’t have children ch”v. The tzaddik just suggested this as a way of helping them bederech hatevah, that would seem more natural, instead of a miracle.)

Rolling Eyes

It's actually very bizarre for males to have the name Yona considering a Yona is a female bird.
