Hi,
Dh and I will be travelling to New Orleans in May . We will, G-d willing, have a 7 week old with us at the time.
I was wondering if anyone knew about the frum community in New Orleans, attractions, sight seeing, kosher food situation, etc.

Also...we are hoping to also take a small road trip from New Orleans to somehwere relatively nearby (say, no more than a 10 hour drive). Any ideas of nice places to visit within 10 hours of New Orleans?

We'll be spending 3 days in N.O. and probably 3 days somewhere else (including travel).

I went about 1 year ago to work in our office there for a day...Metairie is about a 10-20 minute (depends on traffic) ride and the Kosher Deli was still open and for a certain amount they delivered. The kosher restaurant in the French Quarter had closed.

One of the best restaurants I've ever eaten in was in downtown New Orleans but I think I read that it was hit by Katrina, I'm not sure if it reopened. The frum community is in Metairie and they have some restaurants and takeout.

Go to http://www.chabadneworleans.com
that is the website of the Chabad Shluchim there. It has info on kosher food, places to stay, minyanim, etc.

They are VERY nice people so I'm sure you can also email them or call them for more info.

Enjoy your stay!

We're actually travelling to N.O. because DH is speaking at a conference there. Is it really so terrible as a city?

Anyone have any ideas about our road trip? Are there any interesting places to visit within a 10 hour drive?

I've been there and contrary to another poster I thought it was beautiful. There's lots of walking tours, which is good with a carriage. we also went on a plantation tour, which I guess is also o.k. with a carriage. Have fun!
