The secular name Pia comes from the same root as Pious.

secular? For non jews it is secular, for Jews it is a well know Ladino & Judeo-Italian name.

Paya would be from Puah as far as I know. Pia, well, is the person Ashkenazi or Sefardi or??

Yes, if she's Ashkenazi then it's a Yiddish name unless they're Ashkenazic Italians. My dh happens to have a cousin, Pia, who's Ashk. Italian and on her it is from "pious".

Right makes sense, but this is two yuds, which is not the sound in Chanukah or Burich.... It's more of Paya rhymes with Maya, but it makes sense for Puah to be it. Thank you.

I once had a student named Paya but she spelled it פאיא. I don't know what it means though.

In A Dictionary of Ashkenazic Given Names by Alexander Beider, it gives the etymology of
פייא and פייער as derivatives of Tzipporah. Unfortunately the entry is too long for me to copy so that it would make sense.
