| Is this normal? My four year old dd still has cradle cao around on side of her head. I started taking it off, and huge clumps of hair came with it! Now she doesnt have cradle cap, but a bald spot instead?

DS had it at about 2½.
It's OK.
THe best thing I found to get rid of it: oil.
Wash her hair with oil, and rub it around. THen wash it all out with dish soap to get out the grease.
It'll pretty much come out like that. I don't remember, but I think I combed it in the bathtub before rinsing.
PS, his hair was gorgeous after those washings.
THere is another thread that discusses this. You may want to search for it.

| IIRC something similar happoened with ds. They weren't HUGE clumps of hair but he did have a small bare spot and I felt soooo guilty! Not to worry, it's only from the pulling. You pull on the scales and they yank the hair out. It grows back, just like the eyebrows you tweeze.

use oils & conditioners ... think hot oil treatments, vitamin E, olive oil, baby oil
dish washing soap is going to dry out the scalp after you just spent time moisturizing it ...
massage her scalp to help blood circulate ... _________________ don't wonder why people go crazy ... rather wonder why we don't

| The woman at the hair salon told me when older kids get this it is from not getting all the soap rinsed out of their hair when you wash. But I'll tell you what I've found take care of it, no pulling - tea tree oil shampoo and conditioner. Another suggestion from the woman at the salon. Works like a charm.

It is still debatable if they really cause a problem, the amounts in shampoo is low and absorption is almost nil. Cross this off your list of things to worry about.

From a study that agrees: | Quote: | Conclusions
As the report states, breast growth in pre-pubertal boys is extremely uncommon, yet three
cases are reported within a short period of time, and all in the same clinic. Considering
that some 200 tonnes per annum are produced of both lavender and tea tree oil, that most
of this goes into personal care products, and that very little of the evidence presented for
these 3 cases is convincing, the press reports of caution are premature.
Even if one or more of these cases was linked to product use, any connection with either
lavender or tea tree oil is unproven. Other known endocrine disrupting ingredients in the
products could have played a role. Furthermore, we do not know what other factors, such
as dietary or environmental, may have played a part.
The in vitro work reported by Henley et al (2007) does indicate a hormonal effect.
However, this cannot be extrapolated to estimate actual human risk, especially without
knowing more about the essential oil constituents causing the in vitro effects seen.
No connection was established between the in vitro work and the three cases, and the
case for tea tree oil having an effect on prepubertal gynecomastia is especially weak.
Phytoestrogens generally have a very weak hormonal activity, and it is implausible that
the amounts of essential oil that enter the body from product use would have a significant
effect. Further research will hopefully clarify these issues. |

yesterday I put olive oil in ds's hair. I just kind of rubbed it on the dry parts. its much better, even after doing it once. when dd was younger, clumps of hair would come off with the cradle cap, and it took a long time for her hair to grow in.
good luck.

My sister had this. Depending on the size of the clumps, it might be worth taking her to a dermatologist. _________________ Emmanuel Tzvi: 26 Shevat 5766
