Anyone know where I can get my sheitels washed for a decent price in Manhattan? the salon everyone uses here is 50 dollars! im on the upper west side but my husband works in washington heights so that would be an option too. Any suggestions? TIA

Unless you can bring it to a more frum neighborhood (brooklyn, wash. heights, Kew Garden Hills, etc), or get enough friends together to have someone from a frum neighborhood pick up several shaitels and deliver them back (I've heard of this, but don't know anyone who does it), the best place to have it washed is Jeffrey Stein on Broadway near 85th street. They have 2 women there who wash sheitels, I use Nina. It is about $55, which is a ridiculous price, but I've called EVERWHERE and it's as good as you will find without leaving Manhattan. Welcome to the city...

I have a band- fall for the week and a custom from the box for shabbos. I wear my fall almost every day so I need to wash it every 4-6 weeks and I dont want to spend 50 dollars every time I need it done. its ridiculous.

Maybe you can learn to wash your sheitels yourself. That's what I did. I watched how my sheitel machers did it and learned from observation. It's really not that hard to do!

I don't have her phone number right now but I know that Yehudis Wolpin, in WH, washes and sets sheitals in WH - or at least she did 2 years ago. I am sure she charges less than $50

You can fedex them to a sheital macher so she can wash them and then you can just go to get them set and pick them up.

sounds crazy but ladies who live out of ny relyon the fedex BOTH ways.

fed ex is expensive...she may as well just pay the $50!

Where I live (not in NY), the going rate is $40. I just learned to wash it myself, and bring it on when I have an occasion.

There are some threads on how to wash it yourself, do a search. If you're really motivated, I bet you can take a course in Brooklyn on how to do it.

They charge $40 where I live...... but if you want, you can find someone to do it for as low as $25.

When I was first married I FedExed mine back to where I bought it in BP-- it came out to way more than $55 with the shipping both ways, and th set wasn't as crisp from the shipping and sitting in the box.

The non-jewish wig shops in Manhattan charge upwards of $80 for a full shaitel.

Some of the wig boutiques I called wouldn't accept a custom shaitel that wasn't bought from them, out of concern for damage and liabilities.

I don't know if it's "so easy" to wash a sheital; I wear a semi custom and would not like to ruin it!

It's got to be washed on the head..and if the cap is silk, it could shrink if you don't dry it right away...and you have to know how to dry it correctly, so you don't ruin the hair.

My salon uses lights to dry it.

I would definitely try washing my fall- but I was never really good with my own hair so im skeptical I can handle a sheitel. my shabbos one I dont want to mess with- it was expensive and im pretty sure I couldnt do it.
Hannah, if you could get me numbers that would be great.
im slowly getting used to city prices. everything is so ridiculously overpriced, especially coming from har nof where I used to pay 60 shekel to have my sheitel done.

Absolutely recommend to anyone in the area!

Her website is http://Hairugo.webs.com
