TIVO on Shabbos

Does anybody tape shows on Shabbos? I have TIVO where it is a digital system (but I used to record on Shabbos also using VCR tapes). I thought if it was set up before Shabbos and would work automatically (like a light timer) that it was ok. But someone told me that they recently asked our Rabbi and he said recording on Shabbos is not allowed. He said they do not even use the security cameras on Shabbos at the shul for this reason.

I feel quite guilty now, but does anyone know the reason why this is different than using a timer for lights?

By the way, I know this is a question for my Rav, but I just was interested to hear if others had thoughts/experiene with this.

I am trying, but I can't figure out what the problem would be.
And tivo saves things automatically, would you have to disable it altogether so it wouldn't do that?

Speaking as someone who used to do it (and feel very guilty), I think it's more the spirit of the law than the letter of the law.

AFAIK recording by VCR is assur but by TIVO is mutar because the issue is hashmaas kol and when you record with TIVO you don't hear anything.
