They are to cover a boy's, erm, private parts during a diaper change, so you don't get sprayed.

They are through age 6 months.....that's when they move the least and spray you the most....

I could have used that for the first month. I started being afraid to change my baby's diaper. I seemed to time it perfectly. everytime I opened his diaper, he either sprayed the wall behind him or the mommy in front of him. it didn't help that he had a yeast infection that required extensive cream application, either.
