When I taught 1st grade I saw a noticable difference between the children who did their reading review work and those that didn't.
I think h.w. in grades 1-4 should consist of 5 min. a night of reading Hebrew/ Chumash review, 5 min. of English reading/spelling words/sight words and 5 min. of math flashcards.
