| The current economic atmosphere has me thinking about that book - a lot! It was a great book.

I read it in 7th grade and loved it. Can't remember what it was about though, LOL. I just remember the term "Oakies". _________________ “All that is thought should not be said. I don't remember this one, but I do remember Of Mice and Men...

I just remember that John Steinbeck was one heck of a writer.

And a journalist...the best novelists started out as journalists
Thanks. I kept saying I wasn't going to get an avatar until GR got one...but I changed my mind.
Anyway, back to Steinbeck.

| After I read the Grapes of Wrath, I got some more books of Steinbeck but could not get into them as well.

Tom Wolfe has a great essay about how readers respond to naturalistic fiction rooted in journalism called, "My Three Stooges". It appears in his collection of essays, Hooking Up, which is a favorite of mine.

THE REBBEH!!!!!!
GR, that's what you get for reducing him to 80x80 pixels.
IS it the Rebbeh?

I'm completely confused on this thread. Mimivan, I can't tell what you're avatar is. And Tamiri, I don't have one and I don't think I would use a picture of the Rebbe or 770. I can't decide on what I'd use for an avatar, I'm too picky. _________________ The Chanukah licht transcends all.

| Oops, I made a mistake. It's mimivan's avatar. I think it's a hologram of the Rebbeh or something like that.

(Is Grapes of Wrath the one where they all run to California to pick grapes? Or is that a different one of Steinbeck's? My memory is failing. )

They migrated west after the land they worked (tenants?) in Oklahoma was taken away from them. They worked in vineyards in CA IIRC.

I doubt the situation can be as bad. Children aren't dying of hunger BH. _________________

I just remember that they drove around in a dilapidated truck and worked as migrant workers. and that they were called Okies.

In modern countries, of course not in poor ones.

I remember the part about the pregnant young woman on the journey whose baby stopped growing inside her and it was obvious to everyone that she was going to have a stillborn, and she was in denial. Horrible.
I think that's the same book anyway.

| I remember her nursing that dying man at the end of the book. Her name was Rose of Sharon. I think I read that book almost forty years ago.

Yeah. I remembered something like that.
What a depressing story. After I closed the last page of the book I didn't want to read it ever again. And I can usually read a book dozens of times.
