Hello
Does anyone have a gas stove?
We're moving into a new home that has a glass top stove. My husband and I have decided that, due to kashruth, the glass top stove is just not an option for us. My parents have offered to buy us pretty much any stove we want (within reason, of course). My mother, has specifically mentioned getting us a gas stove. As a chef, I LOVE the idea of a gas stove, but I wanted to know if its practical for shabbos and yom tov.
If I understand correctly, the gas is great for yom tov because the pilot light always stays on so (apparently) you can turn the elements on and off at will on yom tov. But what about shabbos? My husband and I currently have a regular, electric stove. Sometimes we leave one of the burners on low for shabbos instead of using a blech. Could we do this with a gas stove?

If you have a gas stove and adore it (or hate it), please lte me know why! Cheers

I have electric and it would be my dream to have a gas stove. So much more control over the cooking. Sorry I can't answer the other questions. I just want to say that I'm jealous.

pilot lights are a thing of the past ... so say good-bye to turning them on with ease ...

however food does cook way better using a gas oven vs an electric oven ...

I admit, I'm really dumb when it comes to these things. What do I have? There is a gas connection, which is needed to turn on, but it turns on with electricity.

I have a gas range. Most gas stoves have electronic ignitions and thus cannot be turned on and off on Yom Tov. Also, to the extent there is a pilot light, in the newer stoves it is not accessable. We found this out during the blackout in NY in 2003 when I stupidly thought I could cook for shabbat even though we had no electricity because the stove was gas, right? Wrong! You can still leave burners on with a blech for shabbat and yom tov. The benefit of gas is that, if it available in your area, it is much less expensive to run than electricity. Ditto for my gas clothes dryer!

no more pilot lights. I light the fire on yontiff with another flame (on my stove you have to push a button to turn on the electric igniter) If your electric igniter will go on automatically you may not be able to do this. Can't turn off the flame though once its on.

I like my gas stove. Its quick and easy. The only thing thats annoying is that I have different size flames. But I don't think stoves in america are like that.

We recently bought a stove/oven and I davka got a gas, cause as clarissa said you have more control over the heating and it cooks much better.
On shabbos, you have to use it with a blech.
On yom tov, you can turn a fire on but you cant turn it off or make it smaller. And since most are pilotless ignition, there are specific ways how to put it on.

We never really use it on shabbos/y"t because I am too scared of leaving fires, so we have a hotplate.

I have gas and love it.

I have a kill switch on my stove that turns off the ignitor on Yom Tov, so if I want, I can turn on the gas on YT and then light the flame from an existing source.

I also have a gas stove. It also has different sized flames - I think that is the newer design, becasue my mothers were all the same size. The big flame is for a wok, and its good if you have a big pot. I'm never sure what the tiny flame is for.

Mine has a facility that if the flame goes out, so does the gas. So no danger of gas leaks. For shabbos I leave one flame on low and put a blech on top. But I don't leave food overnight becasue I have a crockpot, although my mother leaves her cholent on it.

You could just unplug the electricity and then theres no problem, but you'll have to put on the flame from another fire.

You can't get to the pilot light on my stove for anything. I tried, dh tried, I was crying for the futility of it all. Or we all are completely incompetent, or were feeling that way at the time, with no ac, no gas, no lights for several days, and I was expecting my younger dd and was freaking out! Embarassed Shocked

not true!! our basement range is gas ONLY. not plugged into the wall for electricity or anything. if the "pilot" goes out you have to re-light it to use. the stove turns on with such ease. Only bad part is that the stovetop is perpetually warm because there's a flame underneath. not so safe once your kids are tall enough to reach... Upstairs we have a regular stove where you turn on the flame and it makes that clickity click noise, and a convection(sp?) oven. for shabbos, I go downstairs to cook cuz the gas oven, I think, does a much better job with baking, things come out more even, less dry...sometimes cheaper is better!

So, I suppose I have a gas stove, right? Confused
I don't know about a pilot light, but I've never used anything else and love it. It also has a timer to shut off. When we moved here, that was one of the things that I was not leaving. (I left my washer and dryer.) I'm so glad because the ones here, I don't like.

Why is it dangerous? People do it all the time. You turn the knob all the way to the lowest, and then when you put a match near it, a small flame goes on. Confused

That's the only way the ovens/stoves here go on Shocked . I hated doing it before we got our oven.
