| I think my kids started around 15 months? to use it on there own. I was giving them with a fork but my kids are very independent and wanted to do it on their own

Nati is just now demanding forks and spoons when we feed him.
When I first started him on solids, I bought a 6-pack of spoons and forks for infants/toddlers in all sorts of colors.
So this way he uses both but there are no sharp edges. _________________

my son was using one from a little under a year. I always gave him a spoon or fork to use while I fed him, and he figured it out.
now that I feed his sister, he doesn't like self-feeding anymore....

yes, less than a year. They like it a lot better than a spoon. _________________ “Floss only the teeth you want to keep.”

So you sit with them.
It really depends on the kid. My first I would put something on the fork and leave it on his tray for him to pick up, from an eary age. My second rarely eats with a fork still (a year and 3 months). He just pulls off everything I stick on the fork.

First of all, they're not that sharp.
And second of all, I keep a careful watch on my toddler when he's got utensils in his hands. If I see they're heading for his eyes, I stop him.

They can't do that with the Gerber take and toss forks. I love them! (and no, I don't use them as disposable ones)
At this point (14 months) I feed my son with a fork and he usually takes it from me and feeds himself. I often take my own fork and we "take turns" so that at least I'm sure he gets some in his mouth! But he definitely understands the concept of forks and spoons and is eager to use them independently. _________________ "You can say this for ready-mixes - the next generation isn't going to have any trouble making pies exactly like mother used to make." ~Earl Wilson

Here is my oldest giving my youngest his yogurt. Well, here she is helping him feed himself...
And this is the aftermath:

Notice the yogurt zit on his forehead, the yogurt mustache and beard and the gob of yogurt in his lap... We were laughing so hard...
