| |
Over Shabbos, I was telling my dd about some accidents me and my siblings had when we were younger that resulted in stitches.
Any of you had any good, gory stories?
I, b"h, only have one and it's stupid to boot.
Every Pesach we went to prospect park for a picnic and to run around. We wanted to take a picture by the lake and I wanted for the picture to look like and make believe I was throwing my younger brother in. I was 18 -19 and he was 9 -10 at the time. I slipped and cut my finger. We called hatzala because I was really bleeding and I, as usual, turned white. They said that it wasn't so bad and put a butterfly bandaid. That night, I couldn't stand the pain, so we walked to the hospital and I got a few stitches and tetanus shot, because I have no idea what I cut myself on and who knows what was in the water. B"h, the ER was empty.
I do have gory ones, but they, b"h didn't happen to me.

yup, I was hit by a car when I was about 14 years old and BH all I got in the hospital were about 7 stiches over my left eye.
I dont even remember the car accident but was told by a friend who was there also that I was thrown over the hood of the car (didnt see it coming from around a curvy road) and landed on the sidewalk - I had road burn that grazed me above the eye) but that was all BH!

Nothing gory here either. The summer I was 13 our day camp took us to Holiday Mountain to do some sort of luge sledding. There were two sled tracks and when my friend and I finished our ride down we jumped from the second track over the first one. Being my usual graceful self, I tripped over the track and cut my knee badly. I needed seven outer stitched and three inner. That took care of swimming for three weeks.
Two days after the stitches were removed, we celebrated by going rowboating. As I stood up to leave the boat at the end, I tripped again, hit the seat and split my knee open again....B"H the inner stitches still held and all we did was put on a butterfly bandage, but that took care of swimming for another couple of weeks.

| I think I was in 3rd grade. I was running on a tile floor on Shabbat and fell forward. Got stitches on my chin.

I was riding in a horse show. The arena was open before the competition began so that the competitors could practice the jumps. It had rained steadily, so the surface was soupy mud. My horse took off for a jump, and his back legs just slid out from underneath him. He scrambled trying to get over the jump anyhow, and ended up tangled in it and somersaulting end over end. I managed to throw myself off far away enough to keep from his landing on me, but my face connected with part of the jump (really hard solid made out of 6" poles). Blood was everywhere, pouring out of my nose and scratches. Fortunately my horse wasn't injured. I cleaned up as well as I could, rode in my class (I wanted the points from the competition as we were ranked in the state), and then went to the hospital. Broken nose, and a crack in one eye socket. Had plastic surgery about a day later. I looked like a car had run over me - big white thing on my nose, two black eyes, cuts and scrapes everywhere. Then I went to prom a few days later, happily with a date with a sense of humor. _________________ Nothing is so contagious as enthusiasm. Coleridge

| In 11th grade I cut my thumb tip off while cutting a bagel - I only knew it was bad when I found myself being carried to the car by my Chassidish neighbor! They sewed it back on but I still have a scar that sometimes hurts but BH at least I have my whole thumb!!

I was 5 and in pre 1A, where they have these wooden "step ups" to reach the sink. It was wet and I slipped, cutting a deep gash into my chin. I remember alot of blood and that it took 6 nurses to hold me down to stitch it. I also got stitches on a finger when I was 18, when I cut myself with a butter knife.... _________________ A day without sunshine is like, you know, night.

When I was about 18 months old I fell down a flight of steps and sliced my tongue open. Although my mother called the doctor right away--the bleeding did eventually stop (but you do bleed MORE in your mouth than from anywhere else) I went to the doctor a bit later and he told my parents that had I been there earlier I would have had stitches. Now my tongue has a scar across it. _________________ "You can say this for ready-mixes - the next generation isn't going to have any trouble making pies exactly like mother used to make." ~Earl Wilson

I was in 7 years old. my brothers friend kept hitting my head and running away (I thought my brother was in on it, but this was going on behind his back). I got ticked off that he wouldn't stand up for me and stamped my way towards the stairs (to wake up my mom to complain). I slipped on the tiled floor and fell on my chin!
I had an enormous band aid covering my chin and stitches for 4 weeks!

Wow chani, I cant beleive you rode with all that broken!
I dont know if I would call it an accident or stupidity on my part, but there was one ices left, so I got a bright idea to cut it in half so everyone got, moral of the story is you dont cut ices with a knife. _________________ "Vision without action is a daydream; Action without vision is a nightmare"

I got hit in the head by a metal swing when I was a little kid. I have no memory of this happening, but I'm told it bled a lot.
My bother once hurt his knee so badly that he needed stitches, but somehow his pants didn't get ripped.

One of my earliest memories....when I was about 2 1/2, I was walking a Fisher Price school bus (when they used to have a plastic string attached) around my parents' glass coffee table with sharp metal corners. I must have slipped right into one of the corners head first, b"h it missed my eye by about a quarter of an inch. I needed stitches, and still have a scar, but as long as I don't tweeze/wax my eyebrows too narrow, you can't see it!
When I was about 8 years old, I slipped on my brother's baby blanket and landed chin first on a wood floor. I remember crying in the emergency room and the nice dr. telling me that he would make my stitches so small, that I could still be Miss America one day! BTW, the chin is apparently the most common part of the body to require stitches, and my own family can prove it...DH, DS, and DD also have had stitches there, DS twice!
Rutabaga--about needing stitches and not tearing clothing....this past winter, my other DS tore a hole in his leg on a sharp edge of a high-riser---I am not exaggerating, it was a hole and very gruesome---he was wearing pjs at the time and...not a hole in sight! Pretty weird, huh?

| when I was three, my mother was talking on the phone, and while she wasn't looking I climbed a stool and toppled over backwards- on my head. My mother said that I was in a pool of blood, and that I hit the back of my head- that you could even see the skull. I was rushed to the emergency room, where they had to put a strait jacket on me in order to stitch me up. Ever since then, my mother never had a stool in her house.

| my brother was playing baseball in the living room when he was about six or seven. He ran to "third base" - this piece of furniture. As he slid to tag it, his ear go caught on the corner, and the upper lobe tore. ouch. It didn't tear completely off, but we needed to get a surgeon to make sure that it was sewn well.

There's some kind of lesson in this, but maybe you can tell me what it is. I'm not sure:
I was playing with my brother who was down at the bottom of a broken grain silo (made of bricks, about a hundred years old) It had been worn down over the years, and was about 25 feet high. My brother was making fun of me, and I got angry. I picked up a huge, heavy rock (kids don't realize what damage they could potentially do and I was about 6 at the time) and tried to throw it at him. It carried me down with it, and I was knocked unconscious with the left side of my head open. Of course, I had stitches.
A year later, I was home sick and bored. I saw my brother get off the school bus and I was so excited he was home, I started jumping around the house. I slipped and opened my head on the corner coffee table at the exact same spot
I opened my head at the same spot once because I hated my brother so much and once again because I was so excited to see him.
