I want to make cranberry-apple kugel for shabbos but need a recipe. Does anyone have a recipe that has oatmeal/granola in the crumble part? Please answer as soon as you can since it's almost shabbos here in Israel! Thanks!

In one bowl mix 3 apples, peeled and cubed with 1 can of whole berry cranberry sauce (I have used the jellied kind successfully as well).
In another bowl mix:
2/3 cup brown sugar
1tsp. cinnamon
1.5 cups oatmeal(quick oats)
1/2 cup flour
Blend into the dry ingredients one stick(1/2 cup) of margarine till it's crumbly.

Press about 1/2-3/4 of the dry mix in the bottom of a pan (8x8 or 9x9 or even a round tin)
place apple-cran mix on top, then top with remaining dry mixture.
Bake 45 min to 1 hour at 350.

Your welcome! It's really good!
If you use a regular pie shaped pan, put a cookie sheet underneath in case it drips. I usually do it in a square tin or a deep dish circle pan.

Usually I use granny smith to bake with. I have used other apples though to make it. I don't think other apples would tast bad, it just would be a mushy texture. I'm really sorry it didn't come out for you. My mother and sister also make it successfully and anyone I have given it out to has been successful as well. Sad Did you make any substitutions?

Ohhhhhhhh, you need to use a can of cranberry sauce. That gives it a lot of sweetness and the liquid element in the filling.
Try it again! Hopefully it'll be good this time.

Do you think this recipe would work if I replaced cranberry sauce with blueberry pie filling?

I have no idea but I think it might work. I guess it would be like a blueberry pie with granola type topping?

I was just thinking that in this case I may have to either reduce or omit brown sugar in the topping altogether, since the pie filling is pretty sweet.

Maybe, although don't omit it all together, then the topping will not taste good. Cranberry sauce is pretty sweet also though. In most blueberry pies with crumb topping there is still sugar in the toping. I once reduced the sugar and used the rest of the recipe and was not successful, but maybe with the pie filling it will be good. Let me know.

Yay!! I'm so glad it came out good the second time. I serve it as a side dish but it definately could be a dessert as well. Enjoy!
