I heard that the Crown Heights Beis Din allowed cream cheese and lox. Is this true? Also does this apply to tuna melts. Because I would like to make this for supper, now, in a few minutes.

HELP !!!

(do you know about the Lubavitch forum? This question belongs there)
At the shluchos convention we were told that some lubavitchers eat fish and cheese and others don't. Sorry Wink Both are valid. DH does not eat any cheese w/ fish I grew up in CH and ate cream cheese and lox, but not cooked together like tuna melt.
Call a Rav there are now more offices in CH to call;) Great for convenience.

I have never heard of nothing eating fish with cheese. I've heard of fish and meat, though.

Interesting. I wonder what the reason for it is.

I may well embarrass myself with my lack of knowledge, but I heard there was once a line or something in the Shulchan Aruch HaRav that mentioned not doing it. I was told some decided it was a typo, and others decided to keep it (even if it was a typo). something like this.

however, if someone more knowledgeable than me can confirm or correct this--I'll happily edit. Smile

there is a teshuva from the Rebbe about this which I saw only recently, and although we never did eat fish and cheese together, it seems that according to what the Rebbe says it's fine, and it's only milk that we are makpid not to mix. There is a whole explanation; I saw the letter, just can't recall where it's printed, I could ask my husband.

Tehilla, I think it goes something like this:

R. Yosef Caro, in the Bais Yosef, wrote not to eat fish and milk and said refer to X siman in Shulchan Aruch. In that siman there is only mention of fish and meat. So some poskim claim it was a mistake and fish and milk is fine, others claim it was not a mistake and one should not eat fish and milk.

But we ARE makpid not to mix with milk. (in Chabad) however, IIRC, there is reference to what you are saying in the letter that I saw.

My dh asked and was told only fish and milk...not fish and other milchig products (like cheese).

But I do know other lubavitchers who don't do any dairy with fish, so best talk to your rav.

So what does one do when one hears of a chumrah (I've heard about not eating fish and cheese before, and avoid it) which it seems some Lubavs accept and others don't. If one is a BT with no background, how does one know whether to take on the chumra (or minhag) or not?

Can anyone give the reason for this chumra...?

I don't like fish and cheese together anyway (except for lox and bagels) but I was wondering if it is worth being machmir and why someone is or is not...I never really made a hachlata not to do this...I just thought all Lubavitchers refrained from it, but now I am finding out it depends on family tradition.

bc maybe with the author of the typo codified "fish and milk" there was validity even in the typo.

Well, I a)ask my rav and if he didn't have a clear position then b)my mashpia (probably dh's mashpia so we'd have a unified position).

That's how we've worked out our current approach to Pesach for example.

The reason we don't eat fish and meat is because of sakana, and I guess there are those who think that R. Karo held that fish and milk is also a sakana based on his statement in the BY.

I thought that even those who hold it was a mistake say that even so because it was already written we need to follow it but they are only medayek with milk.

We don't have milk with fish but milchig products with fish we do. like lox and cheese. My husband has an aversion to that sort of thing, but he also can't stand the idea of egg and cheese.

I don't know what "diyyuk" you're referring to. Confused

I was clarifying that even those who don't avoid mixing, eating or what have you, of other dairy besides milk with fish, DO avoid milk and fish together. Since you didn't make any distinction of that in your post, which I had partially agreed with, I had to clarify this difference.

It's ok, your post was just a bit vague and I wasn't sure if you were implying that I was excluding mixing, so I was just saying that I wasn't.
