Water for 5 month old?

I just came back from the dr and said that since I'm starting him on solids I should give him about 4-5 oz. of water a day to help wash out his system or something. I don't know if I will yet, but I remember being told not to give a baby that age water. Did you ever hear of this?

I seem to recall not being told to give water until later, but I don't remember how much later. We're still giving ours whole milk (and rarely water) at almost 2 years, because he's really underweight.
