| Does shortening need to be refrigerated after the seal has been broken?

| Best to refrigerate it. I just threw out one whole pkg because it got so stale, that it changed colour and consistency.

I've never refrigerated mine. I've used the same one in good condition for awhile as well. I keep mine on the cool side of my kitchen....away from the stove. _________________ Life is not about who you can stand on top of, but who you can lift up!

I've never even heard of storing it in the fridge. I suppose if you don't use very much very often, maybe you could. Just don't forget to take it out and bring it to room temperature before you use it. _________________ Emmanuel Tzvi: 26 Shevat 5766

| The whole point of shortening is that it's shelf-stable and needs no refrigeration. If it discolored or got rancid, it was either WAY WAY too old--like years and years--or exposed to excessive heat, which accelerates spoilage. Nothing is expected to last that long except specially-prepared rations intended for fallout shelters and the like--and even they have expiration dates.
