We have a Shoshana as well. She is a yummy 3yo who loves to call herself Roshoshana. When we sing dip the apple she sings Shoshana Tova, so she will also call herself Tova sometimes.

She is a bit on the chubby side, so I call her Smushana.

Laughing That's cute! My Shoshana was/is on the chubby side , too, and I had a friend who loved to hug her and called her Smushie.

Esti S... I'm sure I could have been clearer in my post about avoiding the nickname Shoshani because its assosciated with an Indian tribe and therefore Avodah Zara...

We are talking about a person's name - how they're called in B'nei Yisrael - not just an inanimate object like a coin box. I can see why someone would prefer to avoid an association with avodah zarah in that context.

BTW, even if you thought my first post was pointless or wrong, why would you respond with blatant rudeness?

Why not just say "Even when a name means something in another language, its usually OK to use it in Yiddishkeit, anyway" or something nicer like that?

I'm sorry you found it rude, that was not my intention or tone while writing it, but I can see how you would read it like that.

you have a point about it being a name and being more carefull with names and the avoida zora issue, I just found it odd because who knows what many of our names mean in other languages and if you don't know what it means then.... What

shani and shana are both cute

I've heard of shosh

Oh I just LOVE that song! Actually it's quite cute. In Israel people would just have to start singing it in my presence.

Shoshele, Shoshi, and y es Shani. Never heard of Shana.

I happen to be Shosh.

See what nickname grows on your Shoshana. They are all so cute!

Yup, I'm a "Shana" -- I started using it as a teenager because people would call me "Shoshi", which I hated, hated, hated!

There are only two problems: first, people tend to spell it "Shawna", which is difficult in this day of email. No matter how many times I spell out "s-h-a-n-a-@-whatever.com", they still complain that I don't get their emails sent to "shawna@whatever.com".

The second problem is that occasionally people don't recognize it as a Jewish name, and I'll get some overeager kiruv worker asking if I have a "Jewish" name he/she can use.

Even though Shoshana is actually my middle name, and I go by my first name, I've often thought of changing to Shosh! The only reason why I don't is that I think it would cause too much confusion.

My daughter is Shana. We actually named her Shoshana cause I love the name Shana. Only problem is that people often call her Shaina

I have a friend Shana too... and a friend Shosh too... I think shosh is not as nice as Shana. With such a beautiful name like shoshana Shosh does not do it justice.
