Do you go and get it over with?
Go and try and get out of it?
Postpone it?

Anyone have experience with this and can help me out with some tips? I may get called, what will I do with my kids while I'm gone? Sad

Thank you in advance for your input. Smile

ugh me too GR, this month.

read the paper carefully, I think there was something about a certain amount of children under a certain age at home somewhere...I totally could be not remembering correctly...but I think so.

I don't have any options I don't think except to go.

Really? You're being called? Confused

I'm not exactly being called, just called to being called.

What are you doing with your little ones? Need any help?

if you have children under a certain age youre most certainly exempt. esp. if you have a nursing infant. go down to the meeting with your baby and you'll get an exemption. or mail in copies of their birth certirficates.

you can postpone it, but it will catch up to you. theyll keep calling. I did it a few yrs ago, b/c the date really was bad (I think it was like the day of my vort, something like that, and I got a notice every 90 days like clockwork till I went (finally did it, after the wedding, sheva brachos, honeymoon, move into apt, etc etc was all over)
If youre a f/t student out of state (such as in NJ but live in bklyn), you can get it "excused" for I think up to one year. Certain jobs I think you can get excused for also. Like if youre a consultant and you travel alot and it coincides w/ a business trip.... I would give anything to take off for jury duty these days!! it would be like a vacation...but I just got a note from the dean of students explaining why I couldnt take off (although I personaly wanted to go loL!!!! not my choice)

so here was the google response:

1. You are over 70 years of age
2. You are over 70 years of age and claim a permanent exemption
3. You have legal custody of a child or children younger than 10 years of age and service on the jury would require leaving the child or children without adequate supervision
4. You are a student of a public or private high school
5. You are enrolled and attend college
6. You are an officer or employee of the senate, the house of representatives, or any department, commission, board, office or other agency in the legislative branch of state government
7. You are the primary caretaker of a person who is an invalid unable to care for himself or herself (This exemption does not apply to health care workers.)
8. You have been summoned for service in a county with a population of at least 250,000 and you have served as a petit juror in the county during the three-year period proceeding the date you are to appear for jury service.
9. You are a member of the United States military forces serving on active duty and deployed to a location away from your home station and out of your county of residence.

being a primary caregiver of a child under 10, you are exempts till the child turns ten. You need to bring birth certificate as proof. I had this a year and a half a go.

I was once called for jury duty. The way to get out of it (I think!) is to pick one side and stick with it. For example: (I can give you plenty!!) My mother was picked for a case where a taxi hit a pedestrian. My mother kept on saying that the taxi drivers drive like idiots and would only keep to that. They kicked her off pretty quickly. I was picked for a criminal case where someone was tried for murder and attempted murder. I remember once hearing a story about a co-worker who's fiancee was robbed so I used that story to prove that I cant be biased.
Remember to stick to one side. The judge wants only biased people.
Good Luck!

Actually, it can. If you are the only person who can take care of your children during the day, you can ask to be exempt.

I did that when my kids were younger. Now that they're older, its not a problem. I go and serve.

You need to be careful not to make a chilul Hashem by presenting frum Jews as bigots or biased. A good way to go about it is to insist that you can be fair and impartial while giving the impression that you wouldn't be able to. E.g., I was empaneled on a jury deciding a lawsuit against the Board of Ed by a kid who broke his leg while playing basketball in the gym after hours. I told the judge I worked in school administration and such a lawsuit was our greatest fear; that I thought I could overcome the bias but I couldn't guarantee it (the defense lawyer was chalishing to have me -- I wouldn't have minded being on the jury but my boss would have killed me if I'd ended up on the jury.)

The rules about exemption for mothers of children under 10 vary from state to state. There are horror stories of women jailed for contempt for bringing their nursing children to court with them. This is one of the reasons I have no wish to apply for citizenship here. I can live without civic duties.

I received a summons to serve for jury. (I live in NJ). I immediately sent it back stating that as a non-working full-time mom - no babysitter that my kids go to - I, a mother of x amount of kids under the age of 5, meaning not in school, I would not have childcare provisions avavilable for my kids. Within a few days, I got a reply that I am excused. Hope this is helpful.
