I took her to the pediatrician last night and she started her on antibiotics, but she's really uncomfortable, and keeps going to the bathroom.

I kept her home today, she said that yesterday the teacher wouldn't let her go to the bathroom. She almost made in her class, and then the teacher finally let her go.

Poor kid, I really feel sorry for her, and I can't wait until the antibiotics start kicking in to give her some relief.

For now, I'm pushing her to drink a lot, and cranberry juice too.

It's just so hard seeing her suffer......

some ideas that might help:
don't give her any bubble baths, don;t even let her sit in a tub after its full of soap and shampoo
remind her to wipe from front to back
give her unsweetened cranberry juice on a regular basis, this only helps to prevent a UTI, it wont help after she already has one
hope she feels better soon!

She doesn't take baths anymore, just showers.

She has a bit of a history with UTI's but this is her first one in a long while.

After her first one (she was 3.5), she was diagnosed with reflux (the urine would back into her kidney) - but b'h, her body corrected itself, and that no longer happens.

It's just so hard to see her suffer

they say cranberry juice is good to prevent utis but once you have it you shouldnt drink it because the acidity makes the infection worse

I had a number of UTIs as a child.
and a couple of UTIs as an adult, though I'm mostly past it.
the advice given by others so far should be helpful...also, she should drink a lot of water and use the bathroom frequently/
I hope that she is feeling better soon!

I hope she feels better soon! Antibiotics really help! Drinking water to flush it all out is a very good idea. I just feel so bad that she wasn't allowed to go to the bathroom. I'm just thinking about it and I would have been jumping out of my skin as an adult! Poor poor kid!!!!!!!!!!

Send a note to the teacher that she must allow your dd to go to the bathroom as necessary, on doctor's orders. DD could have her own special pass and not even need to ask for permission.

my kids pediatrician recommends the kid double void, meaning after she is done, stand up, and then sit down again and go. or he says to make the kid sit backwards on the toilet, to stretch the muscle, and make sure it empties itself.

out of curiosity - did you do further testing to confirm the reflux went away.
my daughter had a uti at 5 weeks and was diagnosed with reflux -- she was on antibiotics as a prevnetative for 2 1/2 years.
at 2 1/2 years I took her off to see what would happen (dr. said shewould get a uti with days) she has not had one since (and it's 3 years later now - we actually one time had where I thought she may have a uti and put her on anti-biotics but the test came back negative anyway) so I assume she healed herself and do not really want to get it checked out as the x-ray they do with die right on her stomach numerous times make me very nervous... and I figure if she hasn't had a uti then that's the most proof..

Yes, we did get confirmation of her body correcting itself - she had VCUG's annually from the time she was 3.5 until 6.5 (4 times) - the last one showed the correction.

She was on profolactic (?sp) antibiotics for those 4 years - I didn't want to play games with her kidneys.

e1234 - I know the vcug is very invasive, but I just couldn't let it go without knowing for sure. G-d forbid, she could have irreversible kidney damage.

I'm an adult with constant urinary tract infections. ANy other adults out there? I think I get them after being with my husband? Anybody ever heard of that? I drink cranberry juice all the time but the key is just to drink, drink, drink, anything but not caffeine. I'm really ot very religious about drinking.

Always use the bathroom right after relation to help flush out any bacteria which may have entered. Avoid caffiene- it irritates the urinary tract.
