| |
My custom "out-of-the-box" sheitels are 7 and 8 yrs old. I feel like that's a long life span for a sheitel. But, they both look great.
How often do you get a new sheitel? What is a realistic life span?
Thanks.

| Unless it's virgin hair, Faigie told us on chat that the hair is treated to only withstand about 10 washings.

I also have 2 "boxed custom" sheitels that are 7 years old. One I've had to have repaired twice, the other never. I'm thinking of replacing one of them (the one that's been repaired b/c it needs it again - same spot), though that sheitel except for the spot that has needed repair is still in good condition. I'll probably give it to a friend of mine with similar coloring that can't afford a decent sheitel.

It also depends on how often you wear the shaitel.
A special occassion Shaitel will in most cases last longer than one you wear everyday.nMy everyday out of the box lasted for about 5 years.

| --as CM said, I was told that the treated hair ( not virgin hair) is specially treated to have that fresh look, which will only last thru about 10 washings. after the coating has washed off, the hair wont have that fresh look anymore. to expand.... the dark hair is processed only 1x for texture, so they may have longer life, but the light ones are processed for color stripping and texture. they dont do well long term at all.

if u have more sheitels, and wear each one less often, does that help in the long run? or will they die after acertain number of years either way? _________________ "But it's no use going back to yesterday, I was a different person then"- Alice in Wonderland

| It depends on usuage and weather. When I lived in NY my sheitels lasted around 3 years looking great. By the end of the second year they started looking blah. I had to wear them on the subway everyday to school. I think that the air quality was poor and did damage to the wig. Then when I moved to Florida camboom the sun baked them. If you wear it everyday and are in a lot of sun then expect to have more wear and tear. I have NEVER seen a sheitel that looked amazing after 3 years. Most of the time they look worn but people just can't afford to replace them which is understandable!

My Shabbos one which I wear maybe once a week is 3 years old. My weekday one, which was cheaper is 18months old. My fall is a year old.
All are out of the box customs.

That's weird b/c I know I'm not alone in my experience. Maybe it's all that clean midwestern air .

| Striaght shaitels also last longer than curlies which are more treated and have more product added after each wash.

all curly shaitels are treated? I just got a curly (well not "tight" curls - like wavier looser curls), and they told me the reason it couldnt be longer than what I got is because its much harder to find LONNNG curly hair (the lenght of my straight ones) and if I wanted I could wait....I opted to just get it....anyway, its just regular virgin european hair like my other customs. why should it last shorter? are you saying if I ruin it by treating it w/ like relaxers and stuff? now im worried....

my shaitel macher told me around 2 and a half years, if worn every day, all day and if you take care of it very badly.... it will still last after that but will not look as good.
What do you think?

so it sounds from this thread that I have done well with my 8 yr old shaitel. I just got it back from the macher and it feels so silky and really still looks very nice. She said I still have 2 or 3 years left.
Mimi, btw its a Euro - both of mine are and I highly recommend.

I had to replace mine after 5 years but I had problems on it from the beginning and based on the treatment I got with not getting it fixed (missing hair mainly) I don't buy my sheitels from her. Too bad since the hair was gorgeous)
I have a freeda that's lasted almost 7 years but it's showing it's age especially since it's been my weekday sheitel.
Last year I got a euro wig and it's doing well but I think I'll have to replace the freeda soon. I did so well with that freeda. It was the first sheitel I ever tried on, had already been cut for somebody else (who returned) so I got an excellent price and it's lasted very long B"H.
