I have one. Its basically a thing inside you that is hair and teeth and it grows and it can be painful and dangerous if it gets too large or twists around your ovaries.
If you have one, you should get it checked out to determine if you need to remove it. Google always helps.

It's usually removed laparoscopically under general anesthesia, so the actual operation isn't painful. They go in through your belly button and you barely have a scar. You do have some soreness for a few days and in my experience needed to be in bed for at least 24-48 hrs but within a week you are 100% back to normal. I also do not react well to anesthesia so I think that's why my initial recovery wasn't great.

I have a dermoid too. My regular OB told me to remove it, but he doesnt do laparoscopic surgery. He told me to use someone else to remove it. I went to Dr. Fatahi, in Long Island College Hospital. She is a Oncologist who specializes in the reproductive organs. She told me that it depends on the size of the dermoid. Like the amother said before, it can become dangerous if too big or if it twist around the ovaries. It can burst & get really painfull.
Since mine was only 3 cm big (about 1") she told me that removing it can do more harm than living with it. If I will remove there is a risk of scar tissues starting to grow which can become dangerous. Also, the scar tissues can block the ovary from ovulation & cause infertility problems.
I was told to go every sixth months in the beginning for an MRI to make sure it doesnt grow. As of now, its 2 years & I still didnt remove it, per Dr. Fatahi's advice.

my two year old dd just had one removed a few weeks ago. it was just above her eye, under the brow. You could see it as a little lump, about a centimetre in diameter. She had the surgery done as a day case, pretty straightforward B"H.

I was told it was a collection of cells that didn't develop properly when she was in utero.

for me it took 8 months from the time they found it to the time they removed it until the time they found it. It was 8 cm.

How did they find it? Was it painfull, or did they find it through a routine checkup?

I thought I was pregnant, had spotting and an ultrasound. On the u/s the tech didn't see a sac or heartbeat but did see a mass on/near my ovary and that combined with the bleeding and the pain on my side (and I was feeling sick and dizzy) led them to suspect that I might have had an ectopic. Turns out I just had a chemical pregnancy and the mass they saw was the cyst.... (I was sent to the hospital to have surgery, and I almost went in and at the last second my beta results came back which were >20, which is too low for an ectopic.) What a fun story!

Wow, so they wanted to take out your tube? WOW! Unbeleivable! Thanks God that they got the results early enough. So why did you wait 8 months till you took it out?

Because they had no way of telling what kind of cyst it was, so they wait to see if it gets smaller, since many women have cysts and many of them go away on their own. My dr suspected it was a dermoid cyst but couldn't confirm it until he actually took it out.

Oh, right. I also waited quiet a while till we actually decided to keep it there. First I was sent for an 2nd level ulstrasound. Then I went for an MRI to make sure it definately is a dermoid. Then I went to that Oncologist.
