can someone tell me what the going rate is for a 13 yr. old babysitter? My dd is starting to babysit and sometimes I don't know if she's getting what most girls do. (she's in camp this month).

I don't allow dd to charge "the going rate". I don't think it's fair to the young mothers.

I usually get a high school girl & pay $7 so I would pay a 13 yr old $6, although, unless I knew her very well, I probably wouldn't hire someone under 15.

know her abilities - not just her ... age is not so much as what she can handle ... my 13 year old could handle more than my older dds ...

Is it legal to leave kids alone with a 13 year old? And I think age is an important factor.

Legally, in NYC, a kid can stay alone at 10 years old.

if I'm not mistaken, there are 2 dif. things:
* staying at home alone
* babysitting for others.
I don't know what the law is here, since I was much older when I moved here, and I'm not at that stage yet of leaving kids alone.

Your'e right. I think that you might be able to stay alone for a very short period but certainly not babysit for younger kids.
I just did a Google search and basically there isn't a recommended age when you can leave your kids alone and most states don't have a fixed law, but I found this little clip from about.com on an article for single parents:

The National SAFEKIDS Campaign recommends that no child under the age of 12 be left home alone. For more information, including which states have laws stipulating the age at which a child may be left home alone, read the F.A.Q. "At What Age is it Safe to Leave My Child Home Alone?"

These are the Laws in Virginia:

Age Guidelines

7 & under Should not be left alone for any period of time. This may include leaving children unattended in cars, playgrounds, and backyards. The determining consideration would be the dangers in the environment and the ability of the caretaker to intervene.
8 to 10 yrs. Should not be left alone for more than 1½ hours and only during daylight and early evening hours.
11 to 12 yrs. May be left alone for up to 3 hours but not late at night or in circumstances requiring inappropriate responsibility.
13 to 15 yrs. May be left unsupervised, but not overnight.
16 to 17 yrs. May be left unsupervised (in some cases, for up to two consecutive overnight periods).

This is not referring to babysitting just being left alone.

I'm still looking for babysitting guidlines!

Ok, here are the laws for NY from WikiAnswers.com

Home Alone
The legal age for children in New York, to stay home alone is 12 years of age, or older.
If your children are younger please do not leave them home alone, unless they are with someone that is 12 years of age or older.
Most authorities agree that leaving a 12 year old alone at home for an hour or two is acceptable, but they should not be responsible for other children.
