My 11 year old dd with learning difficulties and ADHD acts like a 4 year old. I just waited 6 months for an appointment with a behavior pediatric specialist. All she could recommend was more meds to sedate my dd. I was so disappointed, to say the least! Now I'm starting to work with a behavior therapist but wondering if it's worth it to try out a nutritionist at the same time. Anyone have experience, for better or worse? Any other suggestions would also be helpful. Thank you!

I would look for a different specialist if she didn't have anything more than meds to recommend! Meds are a great thing for many people but it is well understood that they only help in conjunction with therapy/work on behavior and skills.

Immaturity is common with ADHD, though I wonder if you're exaggerating or being literal when you say acts like a 4-year-old because that is quite extreme.

Behavior therapist sounds like the way to go, but it definitely couldn't hurt to try a nutritionist at the same time as well. I have heard many many stories about health and nutrition affecting kids with ADHD (not to say that nutrition problems cause it or that supplements heal it, but usually that kids with this problem seem to be especially affected by nutrition changes that can make it harder/easier for them to address their other challenges)

Sorry I don't have anyone or anything specific to recommend, I'm still looking myself. A good place to start would be cutting out sugars and artificial colorings and preservatives from your diet. Add healthy fats and fish oil. And keep looking for a nutritionist or someone who can help figure out if there's anything specific that your child needs.

Thank you for your response. I have an appointment with a nutritionist who will probably take her off gluten/sugar. I'm just wondering if anyone was helped in this way or will it be a waste of time and money.

Taking the child off sugar is a great idea!
It's done wonders to me. Just don't quit too fast. Try to stick it out for some time before seeing results.

It can even get worse before it gets better. Much better actually!

Good luck!
