I am the daughter of a psychologist who was "into" this IQ testing business. We were fed a regular diet of IQ. From this I learned:
(1) IQ is just a number. What you do with it is what counts. You can have a very low-achieving high-IQ individual alongside a high achiever with a lower IQ. The reason: a person with a high IQ may be (gasp) lazy, and not realize that it isn't enough to be "smart" to get anywhere. I was told that the "tuchess factor" (how much you can sit and study) can get you farther than the "IQ factor".
(2) It is very stupid to talk about how smart you are. Knowing your IQ can be detrimental. It's better to show who you are with your maasim. I have met too many brilliant people who only had their smarts to show for themselves...
(3) I think that the average U.S. Jew IS smarter than the national average, but that does not mean there aren't plenty of brilliant non-Jews out there (I have met quite a few in my lifetime).
(4) I don't think rule #3 applies to Israel; we have quite a mix of Jews here....

I would strongly disagree here.

As far as genetics are concerned, sorry, but I'm a giyores! (My father was a rocket scientist, however - no kidding - so I guess I got some good genes anyhow!) |
Well, you were smart enough to convert to Judaism!

Or...maybe they have stopped because there is no reason to test kids who are doing well.
| or maybe they stopped because they realized how immaterial IQ is to success in life; emotional maturity and social skills are much more important. _________________ Growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional. (I haven't finished growing up yet; I'm still a work in progress - until 120!)

Wow... Why do these posts always get so controversial??? Why do you care whether people want to classify themselves? So what if they're smarter? Some people are smart. Some are not. Some are beautiful. some are not. some are resourceful, some are not. Yeah. People are different. So what if they want to form exclusive groups? why is that so offensive to you?
If all blondes wanted to make an exclusive blond hair group for blondes to talk, bond and discuss lifestyle as a blonde, why would you care? bc you can't get in bc you're not?? why would you want to join a club whose critiria is not something you possess?
Clearly it's just the IDEA of exclusion that bothers you. Sorry. Life isn't fair. Why don't you create your own organization for a characteristic you possess? then you can exclude whoever you want...
Ok, sorry, I had to get that off my chest.
And for what it's worth, I scored 119 (I've had to take the test a few times and it's usually around there) Does it make my life easier? no, not easier. But maybe more interesting. But I think that's more personality and attitude rather then intelligence. (I did get the lowest score of all my siblings though...)

I don't see the point of this post, but I guess it was interesting, because I read the whole thing. I got testing I think in middle school, but I was not told my score for the same reasons some previous posters mentioned - there is a fear it will affect functioning by either making someone too smug or too depressed. I was, however, told which areas I am above average in. I have strange results because there are some startlingly inconsistent results in different areas. Since then, though, I have thrown myself into improving the things I was told I am not highly above average in, so I like to think I am a balanced person now, although I don't have any particular interest in getting a number as a result of my efforts. I am far more interested in succeeding in life, spirituality, kindness, and helping others realize THEIR potentials. Although validation for my intelligence is always nice, it's sort of obnoxious to actively seek it out or advertise it.
My parents met through Mensa, btw. _________________ Read this before responding: http://www.paulgraham.com/disagree.html
