it was like, buy milk, eggs, bread, and pickles. but seriously, since everyone seems to be cutting corners these days, what other items, food and otherwise, used to be staples but you now consider luxuries?

for me it is kokoush cake. it used to be it wasn't shabbos without it. now, I only buy it once in a while as a treat.

for me its anything from a bakery or baked good items.

not sure why. im not a good baker, and I hardly bake, I just feel terribly guilty spending $7 on a babka that if I just had a little more patience and would be less lazy I could make for like 2

oh and anything from the frozen section (minus gefilte fish)

for us it's books! I used to buy a lot of books and lately I've been using the library like crazy. I know it's not food, but it's a big change.

Just a few years ago ice cream was always in my freezer well like ice.
Now we have it by a Chasana or a simcha or a melava malka.
We went to a Shiur this past Motzi Shabbos after Avos u bonim , after all the little boys got ice cream they were about throw a half a tub of ice cream in the garbage
We wanted to lynch him Smile.

I used to buy dips for Shabbas. Until I recently "saw" the prices of $4 each for a techina, tomato dip, and eggplant babaganush. Sorry, no more...

I sometimes joke that it would be cheaper if we could.be like cars and go to the gas station every few days, instead of eating...

tuna, mayo, eggs - everything has gone UP UP UP ... so where do you draw the line

staples are eggs, bread, milk & coffee

Yummy cheeses, like the braided Syrian cheese with the black seeds inside... yum.

I used to make deli salad on Shabbos, but the cheapest turkey deli is at least $8/lb, forget about real corned beef or pastrami... now I saute chicken breast cubes myself instead. No preservatives, so it's healthier too.

"Luxuries" I feel guilty about but still end up buying: bags of prewashed/cut lettuce/spinach, TONS of yogurt (it's all DS eats, and DH takes it to school all the time), TONS of cold cereal (on sale or generic stores brands whenever possible, it's just so convenient), challos for Shabbos ($4/loaf! But now it's winter and I have no time...). I realize with these I just have to realize that I'll either be spending time or money, and sometimes making a monetary investment allows me to be more productive in the long run.

Pickles are a staple?
On the level of milk, bread, and eggs?

Pre-washed romaine lettuce. At $4.99 for 10 leaves I wash it and check it myself.

Vanilla extract. Cocoa. Lox. Well, lox was never a staple for us--but it was a regular menu item for certain yomtovim. Now it's priced itself right off the YT menus and the only time we have it is in other people's houses or at fancy simchas.

We don't buy any drinks besides grape juice and wine. We drink water and lemonade.
(We do buy 1-2 bottles of juice/soda if we have guests for Shabbos.)

Frozen prepared foods like frozen pizza, bourekas, knishes, etc. It was a yummy treat but just got to be too expensive.
