After the interview....

How soon can I call to find out if I got the job? My last interviews they told me on the spot I was in and when can I start working? Recently I interviewed someplace and they said they'll get back to me. It's been a week, can I call and find out or wait for them to call me? What's the professional etiquette for this?

You should ring them, first thank the interviewer for his/her time and that you're impressed/enthusiastic about the opportunity. Then ask what the next step/process would be. (This is something that really should have been asked as a concluding question at the interview...) At worst, they can tell you they've chosen someone else, and at best they'll tell you they're meeting other candidates. If the latter, trying to get an idea how long it would take for them to make decision. Also it helps to see what people you'll be meeting at the next round of interviews. (This is something a proper company/interviewer should brief candidates--"we'll ring back successful candidates to meet two other members of the team, then the final round with the department head" etc.)

You should do this over the telephone, not a letter or an email, esp if it's been already a week since the interview.
