Yup the MO siyum is tonight.
So weird, my parents, who are MO, went last night and when I asked my mother if there is an MO one too, she thought I was nuts. Where is this other siyum?

(and just for the record and completely off topic, I think that it is terrible that there cant be one big achduty siyum for everyone)

The MO siyum is Monday. http://www.siyumhashas12.com/

There were two more RW rabbanim who originally agreed to speak but later backed out: R. Tzvi Weinreb and R. Nosson Scherman. So it would have been somewhat achduty but now is entirely MO. I'm not sure why they withdrew. See http://haemtza.blogspot.com/2012/07/the-other-siyum-revisiting-issue.html

I also wish there could be one big one, but it seems the celebration of women as mesaymim and their inclusion as speakers is a dealbreaker for most non-MO. But many of those who are going to the MO one also attended the Agudah one. So it's not like it's a mutually exclusive thing.

Oh sorry, I didn't mean to imply it was the only one. I'm sure there's others going on. It's just the one I've seen discussed online the most, so I thought you were referring to it.

One of the first threads on imamother about the Siyum Hashas was titled:
Siyum Hashas - anybody attending, anybody care? (women)

So, the NY Times is not the only one who noticed it.

The article was different from other secular articles I read, with the others being an objective report, and the NYT pushing an agenda. I'm not even angry about the article, I just thought it was not professionally written.

I for one didn't care because I'm busy with my own life and my own stuff that I find fulfilling. The videos though piqued my interest. My dh was never all that interested in the siyum and didn't go, but he does love in depth gemera learning.

I didn't read the article but what you wrote about women applying laws at home and men delving into depth is factually accurate for large portions of orthodoxy.

True, and that's fine with me. but they were saying it with a negative tone. It continued describing how women want to change this. They just don't understand that there is nothing wrong with men and women having differences- it's either equal or inferior.

I was comparing it to CBS and other secular news stations, which gave very objective, professional, unbiased reports.

Something very positive!
Kiddush Hashem at Siyum Hashas
No, I was not expecting any secular news to write something like this, it just made me happy so I figured I'd post it here after my vent.

They even put a negative spin on the siyum Hashas! It always bothers me how they are so anti-semitic and negative towards Jews, and I wondered, what could they possibly say about the beautiful Kiddush Hashem last night?
They started off the article about women pulling down the curtain to pray separately, and ended off with women who feel it's time for Rabbis to come to terms with women learning the Talmud. subtle, but of ALL THE THINGS to report that's what they did!!!!!
THIS is galus. When a Kiddush Hashem is turned into a controversial topic. URG!!!

there are many Jews who work for the NYTimes....this is not an example of anti-semitism, but anti-Orthodoxy. Just a clarification..people who are critical of Orthodoxy may themselves be Jews. It does not equal anti-semitism.

I agree the focus seems to be on creating controversy rather than reporting on the event, and that is annoying. But controversy sells papers.

I went to the siyum and I was so inspired I felt I had to write my not frum (yet!) family members to tell them a little about my experience. Only one person responded. He didn't mention just this, but he didn't understand why there were no pictures of women and asked me (I guess he wasn't thinking Very Happy ) if there were women there. Um, hmm. Rolling Eyes Wink

They just don't understand and anything that doesn't seem equal for both men and women seems discriminatory to a lot of liberal-minded Jews. They don't understand the concept of equal but different.

If it's Jews reporting, who weren't able to feel the amazing achdus and simcha from this siyum it's sad for them.

Btw, http://www.cross-currents.com has an article about this...
