5 1/2 year old comes to our room middle of the night!!

Our 5 1/2 year old son comes to our room in middle of the night. he says he is scared.
he is also scared to go to bed but we started using story tapes in his room to help him fall alseep and it works. he also has a night light. I have eliminated most videos.
so when he comes into our room we cant get any sleep. in our beds etc.
any ideas of how to get him to stay in his own bed?
I have started a chart. he doesnt care. he says he is scared. he doesnt like being awake alone. even though he sleeps in the same room as his sister if she is sleeping he is scared.
im thinking about resorting to bribery a new toy car every morning if he stays in his bed.
any ideas that have worked?

Lock your door and tell him you are locking it and wont open it till the morning. He is forbidden to wake you, period.

I put a matress on the floor next to my bed and let 5 y.o dd sleep there if she wants to sleep with me.

I would NOT lock him out. I think that would be traumatic if he really is frightened by something and what if there cvs there was an emergency.
Anyway, could you walk him back to his room and sit with him for a little bit till he falls back to sleep? And then make the sitting time shorter and shorter till maybe he doesn't wake during the night anymore? My 5 yr old also comes to our room. It seems common for this age.
