I know! I think she's giving Touro Law School a bad name, not to mention Orthodox Jews in general. Quite frankly, she embarrasses me.

I don't get why everyone has to go the same, old, quiet, nice, behaving route. Granted, she wasn't in my school so I don't even remotely know her, but why are you embarrassed every time a Yid does something stupid in the media?

I feel the same way I do as when other Orthodox Jewish clowns make a name for themselves. Cringe a bit, shrug. She's not a reflection of me so why carry the burden of humiliation on myself?

In any case, unless she is really polished and has a lot of substance and political knowledge under all that pink, the interviews will give her enough rope so we can watch her hang herself (theoretically, of course).

Whatever. Best of luck to her.

As an Orthodox Jew, I always try to make a Kiddush Hashem b/c people look at me & know immediately that I am an Orthodox Jew without me having to announce it & I feel that ALL frum Jews have a responsibility to present themselves properly ESPECIALLY if they are seeking media attention. I can't help the fact that she really embarrasses me as opposed to say, Edon Pinchot, who is another fellow Orthodox Jew who is adorable & makes a kiddush hashem by wearing his yarmulka in front of all of America & does not hide his Orthodoxy but instead gives a good name to Jews. This girl just cannot be taken seriously & I identify with her as a fellow frum Jew but she really makes me cringe. I'd prefer that a frum girl hoping to win the Senate race would NOT make me cringe & would be someone who would make me proud. Sadly, that is not the case.

You have a point, but working among non-Jews and being asked to "explain" why some idiots make fools of themselves on Dr. Phil has me throwing my hands up in the air in exasperation.

"she is the first Orthodox Jewish woman with a Snookie tan to run for New York state Senate."

Priceless.

"Just last week when my campaign manager contacted Politico, they said, 'Oh, it's too early to focus on a Republican underdog in a Democratic district, whatever,'" Meyer told me. "And now the Politico called me from Santa Monica, California, I just got a call from them, the Daily News called me. Oh, I'm being on Fox Wednesday, what's the name of the show again, you know that show, Sean something. Sean Hannity. Sean Hannity! I'm being on his show Wednesday. Isn't that exciting?"

She went on: "Also, my campaign manager just spoke to Kim Kardashian's publicist because she's a diva and everything, so they're getting back to me because we're trying to get her endorsement because, you know, she, whatever, my website is literally like her. And also, the 'David Letterman Late Night Show' or something."

When I asked Meyer what made her a Republican and a Conservative, she at first had a hard time answering. She said she wanted to run against Parker, so she went to the Republicans and they endorsed her. The Conservative Party, she said, was more difficult.

"They started asking me a lot about the issues and I told them I was in the middle of law school finals and I'm like honestly, I can't tell you a lot about the issues right now, but what I can tell you is that if you put me up as your candidate I'm going to take the election till the end," she said.

She said they asked about abortion and gay marriage.

"They asked me if I'm pro-life or pro-choice and I said I'm pro-life," she said.

Meyer also said she would have voted against same-relations-marriage legislation.

"I feel like people can do whatever they want," she said. "I just don't necessarily feel like it should necessarily result in marriage ... It's not something I support, you know? But I'm not against--people can be with whoever they want. Just in terms of marriage, I just feel that, you know, um, I guess you can say I'm against it."

I asked her about Andrew Cuomo, who has in many ways been a friend to the Republican majority in the State Senate.

She seemed unsure, at one point telling me, "Honestly, I'm not really familiar with him."

I said he was the governor. Meyer later said, "I'm not familiar with him in particular, his issues and, you know, and everything about him. You're asking me how I would work with him?"

Yes, I said.

"Yeah, so, I guess I would have to see if I was elected," she said.

OK, so that answers all my previous questions. Excuse me one moment, please.

No, it's not an aveira.

BTW, many of the quotes here are from articles that she linked to her own campaign website.

This section is public and googleable. I'm sure like any person she googles herself.

Why be unkind? It's not like she hurt or killed or molested or cheated someone. My heart hurts to see how everyone is demolishing her like this. It's not right.

To me, she's little more than a novelty item. I don't live in that district anyway. (However, I would like to hear if she's planning to help NYS homeschoolers, since she's so pro-school-choice.)

I really dont see how anyone is being unkind. She is in the public eye- she chose to be in the public eye. She said her inspiration came from Elle Woods in Legally Blonde, you cannot say you decided to follow in the footsteps of a movie character - who was not taken seriously for a long period of the movie- and expect to automatically be taken seriously... She just comes across as clueless and bizarre and yes, unfortunately a little bit cringeworthy.

I think the harshest criticism should be leveled against the party endorsing her.

Doesn't anyone vet their candidiates anymore?

Will they endorse any shmo off the street who wants to run for office?

NY is a democratic state. The republican party has limited options.

There are 311,000 constituents in the 21st district. Surely there must be *some* eligible and more qualified Republicans there???

I don't think it's fair to accuse her of creating a chillul Hashem. Money laundering is a chillul Hashem; hurting kids is a chillul Hashem. Putting your foot in your mouth while running for elected office is NOT a chillul Hashem, and is, in fact, bound to happen. Should frum Jews not run for office because they might do or say something stupid and cause everyone to think less of the Jews? That's a bit of a ridiculous standard.

I think her website would have made the news even if she weren't Jewish, and everyone would be making fun of it just as much (maybe frum people wouldn't be talking about it, but everyone else would). I don't see this as a frum issue. I actually think it's wonderful that a frum woman from the really judgmental part of Brooklyn is in law school and getting involved in politics instead of getting married becoming a speech therapist like everyone else she knows. I also think it's such a shame that she's coming off as a silly, ditzy, little girl. She really should have thought this through a little better.
