my 18 month old son is very articulate. hes also very clingy. so I usually have to take him with me when I go to the bathroom.

Today I realized that I will somehow have to go alone.....

baby: "Mommy, poopy diaper?"

me: "no"

baby:" Mommy, stinky diaper?"

me:"no"

baby: "Mommy, all dirty?"

me: "no"

baby: "oh.....(pause).....Mommy tush!!!"

me: (sigh) "yes"

they understand more than we think......

My toddler is also always in the bathroom with me.. I cant remember the last time I used the bathroom alone.
He takes the toilet paper and goes behind the toilet behind me and has a blast throwing in the tissues... but ugh it makes me nauseous that he's so close to the toilet with his hands Sad
Its like he's my little bathroom doula.

I try to distract them with toys outside but once glass broke and I needed the bathroom before I got to clean it up (so couldn't leave unsupervised for 2 minutes) took him in but put him in the dirty laundry hamper so he was contained.

My moms friend once found her toddler in the bathroom -making an attempt to insert a tampon. I dont think she let her dd in the bathroom with her again!

which is why for years we had a playpen out in the dining area and the toddler of the time was in there if I had to go to the bathroom.

Haha, my DD has known all about my bathroom processes for months already, I figure it's good chinuch for toilet training... I absolutely don't trust her outside alone, and I feel bad sticking her in the playpen for this at this age - she considers it like a punishment. Usually she either sits on the bath rug and reads a book, or "cleans" the bath toys with a spritz bottle of water. But yes, she narrates the whole thing, and you know what? I'm not embarrassed at all. I worry a little about the tznius aspect so I try to be a bit discreet, but what do I need to be ashamed of if she should happen to repeat her bathroom stories out of context to others? There's nothing inherently inappropriate about things like "Mommy big girl. Mommy make pishy on toilet. Mommy no diaper. Mommy wear panties." These are things everyone knows anyway, no? And she's a baby, for goodness sake, do people really expect her to understand etiquette?

they do say the way to toilet train a kid is by letting the girls watch mommy go and the boys watch daddy go but my husband absolutely refused when we were at that stage

Yeah I don't know if I would do it on purpose like that. But when you're a mom alone with your very little one at home and you have to go and this is just how it happens, well, I just kind of accept it. I try to be modest when relevant but these are facts of life and the baby is still little enough that it's not totally inappropriate.

I would never lock the door, who knows what they could be up to unsupervised?
My toddler comes in with me, "wipes" himself and then throws the paper in the toilet, I think it's great prep for toilet training Wink

No, I also lock the door. When my kids were too little to be left alone and free, I would put them in a playpen/pack-n-play/ crib (depending where I was). Sometimes they cried, but I tried to make it fast and get back to them as soon as possible. Now I just leave them playing. I always tell them I am going and occassionally they (especially my 21month old) will follow me & knock on the door. If that happens I will shmooz with them through the door and open it as soon as I can (b4 I wash my hands or whatever). Mostly they are fine with it.
The only time I take them in is in a public place when I have noone to leave them with. It hasn't happened so much with my little one yet (I guess we go on shorter shopping trips & often have Bubby along), but with my big girl I try to go into the bigger (handicap) stall and she knows not to look while I'm making (she usually stands by the door peaking out at the people by the sinks). Now that she is a litttle older there are times (depending on the situation) where I would have her stand right outside the stall (where I can see her feet) and just keep talking to her.

Nope. I used to just leave the door unlocked, but now that she`s over 2, DD knows how to open the door, so locked it is (just btw, when I was a teenager, I was babysitting my 2 yo sister and took her to the bathroom with me. Later that day, she announced to my entire family exactly what she saw Embarassed , so I never made it a habit to take dd with me).

I dont usually let my 19 month old son in the bathroom with me, but when hes in a tantrum state, ill let him come in, just so he doesnt scream more. usually he climbs into the bathtub and plays with his bath toys, so im not really so against it. he doesnt pay attention to me. usually. but once when I had my period, he pointed to the slightly dirty pad (sorry if TMI) and said "Mommy made". well see what happens next time I need the bathroom when he wants to0 come in. I think thats a sign hes getting too old for it!
