Which is better? Also, how many quarts does a bowl need to be to make 5 lbs of challa?

Is your question which one can knead 5 lbs of dough? Because I don't think a Kitchenaid can, but it doesn't matter to me as I mix all the other ingredients, then dump in a bowl I've put most of a bag in to. I like my Kitchenaid. I don't really know Bosches but to me one of the biggest endorsements was when dd was presented with a shower gift of one or the other, she said that since the Kitchenaid's worked so well for me she'd go with it. (I don't know if she still feels that way Wink

Anyway, now that I got the ball rolling, maybe future answers will include other angles, like sizes, features, etc.

As far as I know, none of the kitchenaids can handle a full recipe of challah (5-6 lbs of flour).

I've heard mixed reviews about recent kitchen aids, that their quality has gone down a lot, but I myself never bought one so I really can't tell you. The older kitchen aids were very long lasting. It's almost worth it to buy an 15 year old kitchen aid on ebay and kasher the bowl and get new the parts that aren't kasherable.

But then again I went through many years with just a hand mixer and ended up replacing it with a hamilton beach mixer that definitely can't handle big recipes but it actually got better reviews than the kitchenaid of a similar size (4.5 quart I think, it's not a big mixer), and I make my challah by hand. The only way you could use a kitchen aid for making challah dough is to divide your challah dough in half and knead it twice, because otherwise the motor will probably burn out very quickly.

I was told by 2 ppl "in the know" that a bosch is better for breads b/c the motor is underneath. I personally like the easy washing of a kitchenaid. (I have a bosch, but rarely use a mixer at all)

bosch does 5 lbs of challah. It kneads it well. I dump in all the ingredients in a specific order and then mix at the end for 10 minutes and have great dough.
But - the guy here who fixes boschs recently told my mother he does not like the motors in the new bosch because they are not lasting like the old ones (I have an old model).

I find that most electric things the older ones are better.

I have a kitchen aid. I am not crazy over the bosch for a few reasons mainily because the mixer piece is put in 'upside down' so everytime you gotta take something out you get your hands dirty. Its also a bit harder to clean.

The kitchen aid is great for baking and mixing everything but it does not do huge challah doughs. I have the 6qt. bowl lift and it makes 3lbs challah dough no problem.

If you are only going to make challah dough I would go with the bosch but if you want to make cakes and cookies and ice creams too then go with the kitchen aid. Its a better mixer for general stuff whereas the bosch is better for doughs.
