It;s based upon the Enneagram, I guess you can google that.

Can we make a 4 group? I'd love that. Always felt like the odd one out

Hard to sum up very briefly, but the book is definitely worth reading. The enneagram is a way to understand people's personalities based on nine types (with subtypes under those). It's a very rich way to understand people and I've found that understanding the enneagram really does help me to be more empathetic and patient.

For example, my husband, who is a "one," might react in a way that I think is over-the-top about something he perceives as unjust. But I can remind myself that feeling that way is part of who he is - and I can tell him that I understand that matters of right and wrong are very important to him, and yes, there is an injustice here.... but then, maybe we can try to put it in perspective/give the benefit of the doubt/etc...

That's just one small example. The book is aptly named because reading it does give you an amazing awareness of how people are motivated by different things and perceive things differently based on their personality type.

My husband loves the book to. He is a 6 I am a 9. It helped us when we were going through a difficult time with some friends and helped us understand why they were acting the way they did. (They were typical 4's)

I'm a 1, so I got a kick out of your example. It was perfect.

And by the way, all you 4s, I just don't think it's right to make your own group and leave the rest of us out. Wink (that's so 1)

Did anyone also read the Myers-Briggs personality system? (the letters) I find the combo really helps understand people.

Then add to that, I've now read The 5 Love Languages.

It helps so much to understand differences.

My kids all know the enneagram, too.

You might appreciate this recent conversation:

DD asks, "What's (brother's) number?"
Me, "Why do you ask?"
DD, "Well, whatever number he is, I hate that personality!"

I'm a healthy 5 with a 4 wing. People mistake my wanting to understand people and thier behavior as being nosy. For me it's more an urge to make sense of something then to know what really goes on in thier lives.
I love the book since I always believed that everybody behaved in a sensical manner and someone acting weird probably has something inner that propells then to behave differently. the book kinda illustrates that by explaining what is kind of the behind the scenes with a person.

I don't have any enneagram books now, and I have a question...

How can you tell by observation, if a person is a 1 or a 4?

I know they seem very different, but as an observer, I can't seem to tell whether my teen DS is an unhealthy 1, or a 4...Doesn't an unhealthy 1 look like a 4?

Does an unhealthy 1 go to 4?

PS, I don't think this is discussed in Adahan's book.

Could she be a 4 with a 5 wing? 5 can look like 1.

Yes, I would definitely consider that. Certainly not a 4 with a 3 wing. But how would I know? He could be a 1 with a 9, and still look like a 4 on the surface.

Can any of you tell the difference by short discussions, what number a person is?

4s are outstanding in their trait of always finding meaning in suffering. They are always focused on tragedy, problems, regrets, what might go wrong. etc.

A 1 would find justification for suffering.

How is that different?

A 1 isn't focused on that. A 1 is focused on everyone doing the correct thing. "Shoulds".
