she gets them a couple time a day, and they make her so miserable! her body is so teeny, and it looks like it hurts! is there anything I can do to prevent them? or make them go away? I feel so bad for her!

if you nurse her for a minute or so it should stop. just be careful not to bounce her around too much after nursing.

Are you sure they hurt her - or do they hurt you? I had this with ds and was really upset until DH, I think, pointed out that he seemed fine nad wasn't bothered by the hiccups.

hiccups are caused by full tummy or air in the tummy.

If you think it's from over feeding her, then make sure to allow a 3 hour break between feeds.

If it's not from over feeding, you might want to have a lactation consultant check for proper latching, and coordination of suck/swallow/breath.

If it's a bottle fed baby, then that's another story altogether.

my shafele had that. it gets better with the time, less frequent and less strong. According to Dr Spock its normal Smile I was also concerned at first, cos it looks as if they suffer, but I dont think they are too bothered by it.

hiccups can be painful.
they are a form of indigestion.
burp your baby really really well before putting her on her back...then she wont even get the hiccups.
but yes nursing can take them away.

I don't think hiccups have to do with overfeeding or burping. My babies have hiccups very often, starting prenatally (def no problem of burping or overfeeding then!) and continuing as newborns. They are random. They taper out pretty quickly. I don't think it causes much distress, certainly no pain.

my little girl had them in utero all the time! when she was born she got them several times A aday (she was also quite small at 4.5 pounds). the doc said there was nothing to do about it...that was just her!eventually it did slow down but at 1 years old now she still gets them pretty often..it never hurt her though it was just annoying- how do you know it hurts her?

I think hiccups can be a symptom of reflux - if she really does seem upset or uncomfortable, I'd look into that. Not trying to scare you (it doesn't have to be a big deal), it's just something to consider.
