So, when was the last time you wrote anything in print Hebrew? I'm talking about other than when teaching kids who don't know how to read script yet?
We spend a lot of effort teaching our kids how to write print Hebrew, then teach them to write script Hebrew, which is then how they write Hebrew for the rest of their lives.
Reading print obviously is important, but why on earth do we bother teaching them to write print when they have no use for that in life ?

I didnt teach my daughter. she figured it out herself. I wouldve skipped it, but she did it alone. and for now she writes like that. in english I dont understand the whole capital letter thing. if they dont know lowercase they cant read. so that was the first thing I taught her when she was writing letters. _________________ Death Is The Only Guarantee In Life.

ITA -- I believe it is an unnecessary skill. The only thing I can think of is if you want to teach writing together with reading (which is actually a very good way to strengthen reading/ spelling/ phonetic skills). Since they are learning to read in print, if you want them to practice writing at the same time, you don't want to confuse them with a second set of letters.
OTOH, I believe teaching English script writing is a complete waste of time in today's day and age. In the "real world" today, everything is typed, and if you ever need to jot down something, print works just fine!

@shahevet
how can your kids not have been taught it? its part of a regular curriculum. when they read and write in first through third grade until they start to read script.

For the times they need to write something down for someone who can only read print.
I had one of those times in the last year, when I had to write down someone's name to someone who never learned script.
Probably, in the circles I'm in now, those instances will become close to zero, then it isn't needed, but I did latin at school up to age 16, pretty useless, but not a bad thing either.

Not ours.
"Handwriting Without Tears" is a popular curriculum, excellent for both school and home.
As for teaching Hebrew printing (in the US, anyway), I think it's supposed to reinforce the reading skills, and allows children to communicate in writing before they are ready for script.

if you want to teach it eventually, OK, but as a first alphabet it seems a waste of time.

Who teaches kids to print Hebrew letters? In the schools I know, they go straight to script (in kindergarten- 5 yr olds). _________________ The Chanukah licht transcends all.

Most curriculum teach script in first grade (we're talking Hebrew, not English). They are taught to READ print Hebrew earlier than first grade, and to WRITE script in first grade. The op is asking about writing in print. I also believe it was unnecessary, as long as they can read print and write script.

My son had a very old fashioned bubby-like teacher who insisted they spend a while each day tediously copying print Hebrew letters, since "that's how we always did it."
I told her once, way back in the day, you also made lefties write with their right hands

OK, I stand corrected. The girls learned to print the letters (gan chova), then write script (kitta aleph). But the boys definitely didn't learn to print, just started writing in script (kitta aleph, which is when they already know how to read chumash).

| Neither I nor my dh nor my dc nor anyone I know had print Hebrew as part of their curriculum, just script. Anyone who prints picked it up on his own or took a class in calligraphy.

| I had to fill out some form the other day in Hebrew block script. I had to keep glancing at a newspaper to make sure I was forming the letters correctly. My "tets" came out weird...

| I am surprised. The schools in my US community do not teach the kids to write print Hebrew. They learn to read it in Pre-K and K, and then move on to learn to read and write script Hebrew in 1st and 2nd grade. Is it different in Israel?
