BBQs get togethers offers a huge variety of food. All tantalizing and plentiful. Hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken,
steak. Fries, buns, and mayo soaked salads.

Is it desirable to make a bbq for a crowd more healthy?

Or should we leave bbqs unchanged?

What is your trick to enjoying a bbq in moderation?

I limit it to 2 meat options at most. no fries at bbq, I do corn. I rarely do mayo stuff, I grill lots of veggies. and if I don't have buns, we use whatever bread I have on hand. (I don't buy much bread anyway.)

I'd like more than half an hour without rain first...

good luck on that one...

rain is a good way to keep bbq's healthy, manyhats. time it so that it rains after a half hour. anything not eaten will be soggy and yucky. this will either prevent guests from bingeing or encourage them to do so at all future bbqs. it's a risk you'll have to take.

Does anyone limit BBQ's because of the carcinogen aspect?

That's the reason why my husband doesn't want to buy a grill...

Us, Tova. Everything in moderation. We wouldn't have a weekly one.

One doesn't need a bbq to overeat, and I actually associate bbq with healthy grilled meat, grilled veggies... much healthier than many daily meals in frum families (non frum also, often). One should be careful to not let things burn.

MD,

How far do I have to travel to get the buns? I hail from Queens, NY.
How about I come on the day you make a BBQ?

Nah, I want my guests to enjoy themselves. No rain dance for me.

Tova,

I hear you. BBQs definitely associated with that carrocinogin(?) thing.

Me personally- I threw out my defective grill last summer and have not replaced it as of yet.

I agree Ruchel.

And yup, I eat a ton of chicken, ground lean turkey, veggies, etc. and BBQ is a great flavorful way of preparing and healthy from a fat/calories perspective. That's why I campaigned to buy a grill this summer but my husband is very concious of the other aspect I mentioned.

brooklyn. lol. it'd probably be easier for you to just go to shop rite. that's where I got mine.

maybe we should have a bbq meet, but then we'd have to settle appropriate hechsherim beforehand...

we have a grill, but don't grill more than a handful of times during the summer.
and I'm just as capable of burning things on the stovetop...

We had an indoor bbq tonight. Beautiful sunshine until about 4pm, when it got cold and rainy. So I cooked everything inside. I ate more then I should have but not as much as I might have.

we have a cheap kettle bbq.

If you use a gas grill and a relatively low flame, the risk isn't that significant. Anyway, we probably end up BBQing once a month or so.

We have one kind of red meat at most- either burgers or steaks. Marinated dark chicken cutlets (pargiot) are really my favorite. BBQ chicken is also great. We also grill lots of vegetables and usually chop up a fresh veg salad. We don't do any mayo- ds is allergic.

My butcher sells boneless, skinless dark chicken already marinaded in some kind of middle-eastern flavor. I don't live in NY, but I know it's sold there too, not sure where though.

Chicken cutlets are good marinated in olive oil and Montreal chicken seasoning.

Maybe, but not the Pereg one. It's much more flavorful.

You want a good barbecue? Come to us in the summer, in February, to where my dh works. DELICIOUS!!! We don't use a gas grill. There's a built in brick grill with a chimney in the backyard. We have steak, burgers, grilled onions, peppers, and a fresh vegetable salad.

We definitely limit them to once in a great while, and we parboil the chicken first so that it's on the grill for only a short time (as if that helps) and try to add non-BBQ'd foods to stabilize...otherwise I think we all start to feel a bit sick from it. I'd prefer to skip hotdogs and sausages in order to eliminate even more chemicals (that the liver has to deal with).

I would prefer to make more fresh salads and green veggies, and skip the corn and potatoes.

I noticed that people use bbq's as a reason to overeat. I don't know why. we bbq just about evry sunday in the summer, and we stick to lean meats and veggies.
