In CA I used my Brita or bought bottled just because I didn't like the taste.

Up here in BC, tap all the way. Tastes clean and wonderful!

I drink the tap water in the UK but now I am in NY and I am spending a LOT of money on bottled water.

But... but the tap water here is better than in the UK!

Why are you spending money needlessly?

In this weather, especially...

im in israel, the water is pretty rough on everything. hair, clothes, urns, everything. my husband sat in the bathroom 19 times in one day after he drank it for the first time. when my filter went bad my first year here I was doubled over in stomach pain. however I slowly got used to it, and thats what we drink. it tastes gross, but I make sure its ice cold (with piece of ice) and I drink it. can't afford bottles, and brita isnt enough. I would need about 10 in my house for the amount that goes daily.
I think it depends both on where and even sometimes household to household. I have only had to use a brita when living in modiin. The other places that I have lived, I always drank tap water. It always tasted fine and buying brita filters all of the time was just too expensive.

Tap water. Even in NYC if filtered. My kids are tap water drinkers too B"H. In fact we buy packs of bottled water for convenience (e.g. trips) and some of my kids prefer the tap to the spring water so they spill out the water and fill it up from the tap. Confused Razz

To elaborate. I like the water in my hometown, Hamilton Ontario , but find tap water cold, as long as my doctor who is a travel specialist considers it safe to be just fine. Been in israel since June 19, got an unsettled gum from water and dairy. Laid off the dairy, continued to drink water and now am just fine with tap water. Had some dairy today but it made me super gassy. I don't avoid milk at home though.

You are correct. It looks gross when concentrated but all it is is the minerals that are left behind when the water evaporates. (Good grief, foodie snobs shell out big bucks for "gourmet salts" which are nothing more than the mineral-laden residue left behind when seawater is evaporated. And some of them have a distinctly unappealing color.) these minerals are a good thing unless heavy metals are among them. I ROFL at ppl who spend money on Evian water (which btw tastes dreadful thanks to its high mineral content) or other mineral waters while turning up their noses at the same minerals in their own municipal water systems.

Now some places have such heavy mineral content that the water tastes bad even to the natives, in which case I wouldn't blame them for buying some other burg's water. There are water-softening systems to remove the minerals, but as these systems often use salt in the process and leave the water with high sodium content, that's not a good choice for people concerned about sodium intake.

Hey, I caused a spin-off. How cool is that!
Just to clarify, as I said in the other thread, I do cook with tap water and wash dishes, and though I didn't say, I also do brush my teeth with it too - but I am so accustomed to bottled water that I honestly can taste the difference in tap and I don't like it. I don't buy Dasani or Acquafina though, I know the difference.
HOWEVER, you have all kind of inspired me - I may just try to fill a pitcher of filtered sink water for my next Shabbos meal instead of going to the cooler and see what happens...
Everyone here seems to drink tap water, yet everywhere I go women are drinking bottled water - wonder why that is. I also do own several refillable thermos-type things, but we refill them from the cooler - still cheaper than constantly using disposable bottles.

I can't imagine why. I've read surveys that report that NYC's water was rated best-tasting in the USA. I grew up in NY and took the water for granted--it's just water, and water is water, right? Wrong! Once I started traveling I learned that water varies a whole lot from place to place and yes, NYC water is really good. Philadelphia, D.C., Phoenix--not so much.

At home I drink tap, but I take bottled water with me for convenience when I'm going to work, shopping, or just doing family stuff out of the house. Yeah, I know I can use a non-disposable bottle. Maybe one day I won't get overwhelmed at the thought of cleaning it daily.

Until the whole copepod issue came up in NYC, we drank water straight from the tap. We installed an under the sink filter to deal with the kashrus.

I drink filtered tap water at home. I have bottled water to take with me or serve guests who prefer bottled water.

Hey, you'll see me with a water bottle when I'm out. But either I've bought it because I'm thirsty and forced to pay for it, or its a bottle I've refilled many times. At home its only tap water.

Water tastes different from different taps. My kids school has horrible tasting water, and its very close to my house. The water from my house tastes fine. We live in a soft water area but I grew up in London and the hard water there tastes fine too.

Ah ha, but there is also a school of thought that refilling disposable plastic water bottles is unsafe b/c of stuff that leeches out of the material.
You can't win.

My mother had a filtered tap water installed in her house-and I remember drinking from that since I can remember. I cant get used to the taste of tap water at all. I used to purchase bottled water till it became too much of a nuisance so I had a filter installed too, I use it both for cooking and drinking.
