Tap water in NYC, which is from the Catskill Aqueduct, is of extremely high quality. It actually isn't even filtered, it's so clean. So to say it's not good or safe is weird to me. I understand some people's concerns about the bug thing -- that can be prevented through a simple filter.
Bottled water is often from a municipal source anyway, as Emes pointed out (Dasani and Aquafina are both just tap water that's been filtered), and it's not even as good as what we can get out of the tap right here for a thousand times cheaper.

| If all the campers are not drinking tap water because it is undrinkable, why doesn't the camp provide it?

I dont know anyone in the NY area that drinks from the sink. I assumed that it wasnt safe. |
Hi! My name is Seeker. I live in the NY area and have been drinking tap water my whole life. Now you know someone.
1. New York's municipal tap water is ranked among the safest in the nation for drinking straight from the sink.
2. Then there was the copepod scandal, which doesn't make the water any less safe or sanitary but does raise halachic concerns. However, a number of major poskim have ruled that the water IS kosher and that the presence of copepods does not change that (longer discussion - not to derail this thread) This includes my family posek so we're cool, but tap water filtering is really easy so we do it just in case we have guests who are makpid.
3. OP's daughter is in camp in the Catskills, I don't know about all camps but the one I went to for many years got its water from a well system, not the state reservoir system mentioned above as being among the safest and cleanest in the US. I personally did a chemical and mineral test on it just to be sure, and it was very clean, and always tasted fine. And there is no halachic issue of bugs in well water, ever.
It does seem that bringing bottled water to camp is the "in" thing, I delivered some girls to camp last year and everyone seemed to come with their own case of water. However, I think this is total mishugas, we never heard of this when I was in camp, and if that case is going to last them the whole month or even until visiting day, in the heat of summer on a camp activity level, THEY'RE NOT DRINKING ENOUGH. I'd rather encourage kids to drink possibly-sketchy camp tap water than deal with dehydration and heat stroke. Furthermore, I have not seen this in the boy camps, only by girls. I mean, maybe one or two guys who have a lot of older sisters might bring water, but it certainly doesn't seem to be standard. So my verdict is, as others have said, that this is an area to extend kids' comfort zones, and I second (third, fourth, whatever) the suggestion of a personal-size filter canteen as an option for the extra finicky. However since it does seem to be standard, if 90% of the camp is bringing their own water and my kid was complaining that the tap water isn't good for whatever reason, I'd probably buy into the mishugas just so she shouldn't have to stick out in something that's so important to her However I also think that if the water in camp is so unfavorable that 90% of the campers are bringing bottled drinks, then the camp should be responsible to either improve their water supply with some kind of treatment or plumbing upgrade, or find some other way to provide acceptable drinking water. Lord knows you're paying enough for them to take care of your kid, hydration is a pretty basic part of that...

| If your dd drinks bottled water more readily, I'd definitely send it, because then she will drink more, and be safer. Since we installed a costly mineral water dispenser at home, we all drink more water. IMHO it's a matter of safety, and not an issue to make a point about chinuch, unless you really have to.

Agreed, Isramom. In a way I feel like all those saying to buy her the filtered bottle are right, but who am I kidding? I also drink bottled water and that's what she's seen at home - it's definitely a matter of safety and she is a big water drinker so it's a necessity, IMO. Perhaps we all need to work on drinking more tap water, but that's a whole other matter. I have filters on my sinks for cooking but I also have a cooler for drinking. And I'm far from spoiled. I drive a 12 year old van and live in a rented apartment - so fargin me my water, please.

NYC water is perfectly safe to drink. Frum ppl filter their water because of possible presence of tiny shratzim called copepods. (Ironically because NYC water is so good, it doesn't have to be filtered by the municipality. Places with less pure water have to filter it prior to release, therefore any copepods would be filtered out.) It's an issue of kashrus, not safety, the copepods being harmless, and applies ONLY to the 5 boros. Water in the Chatzkel Mountains has no such filtering requirement.
Everyone in the NYC area who isn't kosher drinks from the sink except for those feinshmeckers who think water is better because it comes in a plastic bottle. Oftentimes the bottled water is no purer or even less pure than NYC tap water, being bottled from the municipal water supply of Vustutzach, PA or Lower Slobbovia and having the added piquancy of leached plasticizers from the bottle. Some frum people also drink straight unfiltered NYC water, as some authorities disagree with the psak on copepods.

Did you ever consider going into cartography, Zaq? "Chatzel Mountains"..."Lower Slobbovia"... I like it!
I should add that we do filter our tap water before we drink it. So you can all feel free to drink my water without kashrus concerns at my next Imamother Shabbaton (so not happening.)

it was the first filtering bottle I saw when I searched on amazon. pick another. seriously, the waste that goes into shlepping huge amounts of bottled water to camp is utterly insane - the waste of money, effort, and plastic. so what if she only drinks filtered at home? using a bottle like that is exactly like having a Brita pitcher, only its portable.
I remember the water at my camp having an odd taste, so I don't object to feeling that filtering is better. but shipping cases of bottled water is mamish ridiculous, I dont care if all her friends' parents do it.

Hilarious that my question caused a whole debate. I never said, nor do I think, that tap water is poison or anything like that. However, my mother trained me to drink bottled water and that's how I am comfortable. I do use filtered tap water for cooking and for making pitchers of iced tea, etc. (filtered b/c of the bug issue) but when I want a plain drink of water, I go to my cooler. It may be silly, but it's what I've always done. It's not a huge expense and like I said, I'm far from spoiled - in my own humble opinion, anyway. That's what my daughter has seen, so that's what she does too. And she's a healthy drinker - no soda at all, so if she wants water, I let her have it.
In the end I ordered from Staples anyway b/c although Amazon would have been a dollar or two cheaper, as would Costco, their delivery is within a week or so, while Staples will have it there by Tuesday.
BTW, another merit no one has mentioned is flouride - no bottled water comes with it, while NY tap water is full of flouride.

I get cute plastic bottles for us and we reuse them. Some are for the house; some are for the gym or office. BUY water? Come on. You already buy water, You get a water bill !!!
You bathe in city water. You wash your dishes in it, too.

I also lol'd at Lower Slobbovia et al.
Just want to add that the copepod issue is not limited to the 5 boroughs AFAIK, unless where you live the municipality filters the water or something as Zaq mentioned above. From what I understand the copepods originate at the reservoir or somewhere at that end of the line.
I also wanted to add that I just jumped into the fray because the whole concept of hundreds of girls buying and shlepping bottled water to camp is so weird to me that I just felt like pontificating. In no way did I mean to put down OP or her daughter for following this trend, and of course OP should do whatever it takes to keep her DD well hydrated over the summer (though I still think that the less-picky people who will drink from taps or springs or anything are probably much less at risk of dehydration than those who are trying to make their case of Poland Spring last until visiting day, won't drink at all if they forgot their bottle in the bunkhouse, and refuse to refill from the tap if their bottle runs out in middle of an activity. It just doesn't seem practical.)
