I'm in the US, FWIW. I get my news from the radio (news radio and talk radio), some news sites, weekly (Jewish) papers. (I'm not averse to picking up a secular weekly but by the time I get to the library, doctor's office, etc. I've heard the news, I'll be reading it for perspective.) So I guess I'm moderately informed.

having lived in EY long enough to know that the news you hear on the radio (or read online) is grossly distorted and biased, I lost my taste for it.

In the U.S. I would listen to the headline news on the way to and from work every day. Now I skim the headlines of a few internet news sites about once a day, or once every other day.

I used to read many blogs and news sites, complete with opinions and op-eds...
Now, I just read headlines of news sites and the whole article if it interests me...

Really? Maybe very sensored, but grossly destorted? OPinionized slants...OK. But you simply choose to get your new from the slant that fits you best.

From what I hear around or read online without looking, also sometimes Yahoo news or whatever.

How can an adult living in the free world not have any clue what is going on in the world around her?

To those who don't read/watch any news: Do you vote?

I don't listen to, watch or read the news with the exception of occasionally checking out yeshiva world. I really see no need to know who killed who and all the gory details. If it's really important I always find out. I've had 1 or 2 embarassing situations where someone tried talking to me about a big news item and I had no idea what they were talking about. But I find the news emotionally hard to deal with so for me the pros outweigh the cons.
I do vote, where I live the Orthodox politicians make reccomendations of who to vote for in local elections and I listen to them. For presidential elections I speak to friends and family members to decide who to vote for.

You can read a newspaper, which has fewer gore/murder features and more news re: policy decisions, world news, etc.

You just listen to someone else ("Orthodox politicians"??) without any independent examination of the issues at all?

I get my news when I check my email. Big stories I usually hear about from family and friends.

yes, I have personally attended grand demonstrations (I'm talking mostly about one almost 20 years ago in front of Binaynei Ha'uma, where there were ten's of thousand's of people covering the entire area) that was grossly misrepresented on the news. That was when I first noticed how much bad and how often things are distorted according to the stations' bias. and have you listened to CNN or Fox about the "Palestinian crisis"? pleeeease.

Shabbat, you are cute to start this thread. When I was younger I did not care about the news or what was happening in the big wide world, either. I didn't watch tv or news because I couldn't handle all that negativity. With internet, I can control how much negativity I let it, and I don't spend much time on graphic news reports, usually preferring to read a quick news article or headlines, and not see any videos.
Interesting, and when I was younger I read everything about everything in the world news. And watched the news almost every night and listened to it all as well. But now I am older and wiser Smile
Maybe, like grin said, I feel that many times the news is just so slanted and I also dont want to have to hear all of the rape, murder and pillage that is going on in the world. I will hear about it if it is important.

And DrMom, around election times, I try to stay on top of what each candidate stands for.

I agree that TV news (at least in the US) is largely a waste of time. But you can read a newspaper -- the quality of the reporting is generally better there. Also, you can skip over sensationalist topics (murders, robberies, celebrity fluff, etc.) with little worldwide impact and focus on topics that interest you.

Since you all have internet, you do not need to rely on the TV for your news. You can read newspapers on-line.

Personally, I think the Wall Street Journal is a rather good newspaper for world affairs. It doesn't just focus on financial topics. I like to read a variety of news from various sources, so I can put together a composite of various points of view.
