Where is a good place for an OOT yeshivish young couple in the 5 towns? We are both in our 20s with one DS and both professionals. 5 towns seems like a great place to live with lots of schools, nice housing options, great shopping and a decent commute to the city. My question is where??? I am looking for a place with lots of young families/couples and ideally somewhere that is warm. I've heard the 5 towns can be a tough place to live if you aren't from there. Is that true? We have no family or friends there at the moment. Can anyone suggest any shuls or areas to look into? Hashgafically we are openminded yeshivish, DH went to ner yisroel, all my brothers went to CC. We will probably send DS to darchei, perhaps yeshiva ketana....but thats for a different thread Smile Thanks in advance for any help!

there is a nice community in Hewlett that feels very out of town, big mix, people send their kids to all different schools from more modern to more yeshivish and everyone is very warm and friendly. people don't look at what you are wearing, and it is very down to earth.

I have heard people from north woodmere that love it and also say it has more of an out of town feel.

don't know much about far rockaway but think it is more yeshivish overall but maybe easier to get lost? maybe I'm wrong.

cedarhurst may be nice too.

Thanks so much for your help!

I am not sure if hewlett is right for us. I actually know someone in hewlett and from what she has told me I don't think it is for us. I think I am a little more interested in cedarhurst and woodmere, possibly far rockaway.

When I said OOT I mean that more in a worldly sense, not in a materialistic sense. We are not super materialistic, but DH is a dr I am in finance we do well b"h and we like nice things, though we are not showy. Just looking for a more friendly community a place where we could make friends and buy a house for between $700k and $900k (is that doable?) or for rent between 3000 and 5000 per month.

It's doable, especially for 900,000 you should be able to get something nice. however a very large, totally done home will be over a million.

I grew up in 5 Towns too. Total mix now. Far Rockaway is a big mix now. You have simple really yeshivish to Lawrence types in fancy houses just happen to be in Far Rockaway. It is not any more like the old days where everyone knew eachother. You hope for a nice block with nice neighbors.
North Woodmere is starting to take off now. Was more modern and now some very normal famillies are buying there. I think more of a young crowd too that is moving there. I think properties are bigger there. Lawrence is more fancy people in general, but you can find some really more simple blocks that totally compare to Far Rockaway.
Every neighborhood has it's ups and downs. The nice thing about 5 towns is that e/o is diffenrent and can feel individual.
Hatzlachah!
